The "extreme" sports are not even comprehensible to most. We are awkward and weak. Generally, we have use of only shoulders and biceps. We have poor balance, and no real use of our hands. Building from these neurological limitations is very difficult and usually deters far too many from exercise, and sports. Our project is about starting a trend that will see more quadriplegics enjoy adventure sports that are not currently accessible to people with higher-level spinal cord injuries. == About Brad NEW Crip College A great new web site by Christian Bagg. Extractions: December, 1991 In July of 1990, the U.S. Congress made a significant general statement about recreation in the National Wilderness Preservation System. In its "Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990," the lawmakers decided: "Congress reaffirms that nothing in the Wilderness Act shall be construed as prohibiting the use of a wheelchair in a wilderness area by an individual whose disability requires use of a wheelchair..." The act went on to say that federal land management agencies are not required to provide special facilities in wilderness for handicapped persons, except that they should, when possible, construct trails and bridges "to comply with the intent of this Act." This contradictory language may mean that those primitive, one-log stream crossings will be gradually replaced by plank bridges, and that trails will be widened to accommodate a new form of transportation, the off-road wheelchair. With the invention of the mountain bike in the late 1970s, the off-road wheelchair was sure to follow. In 1989, Up and Over Engineering of El Cerrito, California, introduced the Cobra, featuring four wheel disk brakes, knobby tires, two speed handrims, and a chrome-molybdenum steel frame.

Extractions: The Fossil Ridge Wilderness in Gunnison County, Colorado, offers a real-world example of a solution that kept trails open to bicycling and protected more land than originally proposed for Wilderness. Please come back soon for the full story. The Wilderness issue has been a challenge for mountain bikers since 1984, when the U.S. Forest Service and other federal agencies imposed a comprehensive bicycle ban on Wilderness trails. While IMBA, which formed four years later, has always been a conservation-minded organization, we're dedicated to preserving appropriate trail access for cyclists. In particular, we face a dilemma when new Wilderness proposals overlap trails that are popular mount ain biking rides. We must maintain fair access but we want to protect the land, too. How can we do this? Please read on... IMBA's Position on Wilderness

Extractions: Matchstick Production's founding father Steve Winter was determined to earn a living doing the two things he loves the most - skiing and traveling. Figuring that if he couldn't star in ski movies he might as well make them, Steve enrolled in a video production class at the Seattle Art Institute. At the last minute, he decided his tuition money would be better spent on a used Bolex 16mm camera and a ski resort road trip in a '73 Volkswagen van. He had his first ski movie, the fifteen-minute Nachos and Fear, completed by the time he would have been out of school. Not even a near-death experience could stop Winter from pursuing this dream work. While filming Pura Vida in the Chilean Andes, a helicopter crash took the lives of the pilot and well-known and respected outdoors photographer T.R. Youngstrom and left Winter paralyzed due to a broken back. Through intense rehabilitation, he progressed from wheelchair to crutches and back to his own two feet. He made the most of his down time by concentrating on marketing for Sick Sense and was back behind the camera and in helicopters for Global Storming. Winter's passion for the skiing and his determination to make the best ski movies have not gone unnoticed. Year after year Matchstick's movies are proclaimed to be the best and Steve is one of the most highly acclaimed cinematographers in the business.

Extractions: We drove every mile between Malibu and San Clemente and hiked about a hundred miles of trail. (Yes! We found that many usable trails!) We were prepared to find lots of barriers; instead we found a remarkably accessible shoreline, with many surprises. In addition to world-famous beaches such as Santa Monica and Venice, which are packed with people, activities, and entertainment, we also found serene plant and wildlife refuges where shorebirds easily outnumbered people. We camped under the stars in a sycamore-shaded canyon at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains, hiked through the fragrant sage of the coastal scrub at state parks, and dined al fresco in the beachfront town of Laguna.
