Two teams composed of six players swimming in a pool compete to maneuver a puck sliding on the bottom of a swimming pool into the opponent's goal with a short stick. The players wear masks, snorkels, fins, coloured caps and teeth protectors. The heavy puck (1.3-1.5 Kg), surrounded by a waterproof rubber covering, is approximatly the size of an ice-hockey puck. The sticks, which must float in water, are usually made from wood or fiberglass. They are held by one hand and measure approximately 30 cm long. The goals are 3 meters wide and lie on the bottom, against the end walls of the pool. Underwater hockey enjoys most of its popularity in the U.S. and Australia. preview not available. They use "sticks" actually, curved implements about a foot long to push the puck toward a 10-foot-wide untended goal.

Underwater Hockey Introduction underwater hockey Introduction. underwater hockey is a very fast movinggame that quickly builds swimming and free diving capability. http://filebox.vt.edu/org/uwhockey/Intro.htm
Extractions: Each player uses the following equipment: Mask - small volume free diving masks are best, but any diving mask will work fine. Swim goggles are not recommended. A mask doubles as a nose plug and face shield and doesn't fog as much as goggles. Snorkel - you want to be able to breathe while scanning the bottom of the pool for the puck and your next position. Large bore (to get air quickly), streamlined designs are best.

Extractions: Keeping in shape is an important part of any military training. That's why Marines go to boot camp and are verbally abused by their drill sergeants. At least, that's what I gathered from "A Few Good Men" and "Full Metal Jacket." The Brits had a different idea for their navy: They created a sport that combined the need to be underwater with an ice sport of all things to create underwater hockey. Played in a 25-by-15 meter pool that is 1.8 to 3 meters deep, underwater hockey is played in two 15-minute halves. Each team in underwater hockey has six players, with four players on the sidelines who can jump in to substitute at any time. The sticks are just that sticks. They are used to hit around a 1.5-kilogram lead puck that is coated in plastic.

Diving Into An Unlikely Sport (washingtonpost.com) Diving Into an Unlikely Sport underwater hockey Enthusiasts Immerse Themselvesin LittleKnown Game Therein lies the challenge of underwater hockey. http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A12087-2000Oct4
Extractions: Thursday, October 5, 2000; Page B01 The game combines the roughhousing of rugby with the puck-skimming smoothness of shuffleboard. And it's all played at the bottom of the pool. The air, of course, is at the top of the poolfour to eight feet above the playing field. Therein lies the challenge of underwater hockey. As Tom Treakle, the founder of the Washington region's first team, likes to say: "The only thing between you and scoring . . . is the need to breathe." Every Sunday and Wednesday night, at pools in Severna Park and Rockville, about 15 devotees show up to play 60 minutes of the strangest-looking, most physically grueling game most of them have ever encountered. "Ninety percent of people think this is pretty weird," admits Pat Harris, who helped start an underwater hockey team in Charleston, S.C. "But it's no weirder than trying to throw a round ball through a rim 10 feet in the air. Underwater hockey is as stupid as any other sport." In fact, the unusual sport has taken hold around the world in places as diverse as Australia, South Africa and Serbia.
