Our trails are pregroomed and reasonably wide which makes it much easier for ski-joring and more pleasurable for both canine and human athletes. At Trail Dancer Equipment Required The sport is fairly easy to do but does require that one have previous cross-country skiing experience. The equipment needed is very basic; a harness for you, skis and poles for you, a helmet is optional, a dog harness, a ski-jor line (tow line) with bungee and quick release system, possibly dog booties and a dog coat for your canine athlete (should it be short haired) and clothing for you similar to cross-country ski wear. The key is to make sure the equipment fits you and your dog properly. Plus carry water for you and your dog, amount depends on the length of time out and the distance being covered. This is a sport thought up by people who own dogs that do what they say. I don't own any dogs like that, so my first introduction to the sport was at the invitation of my friend Kate, who said I could use a dog that understood English. Skijor-ing, for those of you who consider watching football a winter sport, is like cross-country skiing, only a lot more dangerous. You wear skies and the dog pulls you, which seems like a good idea until you realize you are tied to the dog in such a way that you cannot avoid any obstacles you may encounter: trees, moving trains and whatnot. It's kind of like marriage. "This will be really, really fun," Kate promised. "Last time I went with someone who had never skijored before, I took my camera so I could snap pictures of her falling down. I got some really good ones. " My husband, who would be skiing in our wake under his own power, said cheerfully, "I can't wait to see THIS."

The second annual Nome - White Mountain 140 skijor race is tentatively set for April 19, 2003 . Race will start at 9 am at Farley's Camp with a mass start. Last year's weather was near perfect. Temperatures ranged from 30 degrees F as a high to 15 degrees F in the evenings. The wind was calm even through Topkok. Several inches of new snow fell between Topkok and White Mountian. Trail conditions were good for the most part- hard packed snow with some drifted areas. Overflow was a problem and did create one scratch ( I went for a swim). Race is held this late in the year to allow for longer days and less wind.

The skier is outfitted with a ski-joring belt, which hooks to a quick-release line which is attached to an X-back harness on the dog. The ski-joring line has an internal bungee at one end which absorbs the shock when you are starting out, or if you fall. Regular track skis are good for beginners, and more experienced ski-jorers can use skate skis for speed or back country skis for off-trail work. The key to ski-joring is a well-trained dog, as the faster the skier can ski, the faster the human-dog duo can fly. We've heard of people who have ski-jored behind teams of eight or more dogs, but no one in the club has been tempted to try this yet. Please see our links section for more on the world of ski-joring. Kick Sledding Hitch one or two dogs behind a light-weight, Finnish-made kick sled and go faster by pushing the sled along with your feet. The kick sled was originally meant for human power alone, but the folks at Canvasback Pet Supplies modified one a few years ago for dog power, and the idea has really caught on with mushers who only have one or two pets. . The kick sled line has an internal bungee to absorb shock, and a bridle which attaches it to the sled. Owners of larger dogs often prefer this over ski-joring, as it gives them more stability when turning. Our kick sledders tend to use a weight-pull harness for a single dog, and switch to X-back harnesses for teams of two or more.

NASSPA is a non-profit, all volunteer organization that promotes this rapidly growing sport by organizing races, recreational tours and instructive clinics and meetings with an emphasis on safe, responsible care and handling. Skijor (ski-jur) is a Norwegian word that means "ski-driving" - that is, a cross-country skier utilizing a dog, or dogs as draft animals. Pulk (p-ulk) is a small sled pulled by a dog or dogs loaded with gear. In races it carries weight to handicap exceptionally fast dogs, or light, strong skiers. The skier is tethered to a pulk and follows it.
