Similar to the orienteering disciplines practised in the summer season, ski orienteering requires an extremely high level of both physical and mental fitness. An elite level ski-orienteer needs excellent skiing and map reading skills - and the ability to combine those two. The athlete has to take hundreds of route choice decisions at high speed during every race. The prepared ski tracks are of various quality. Throughout the competition the ski orienteer has to make decisions about which route is the fastest between the controls. The route choice is made on the basis of the quality of the ski tracks, gradient and distance, all of which can be read from the map. In respect of physical condition, ski orienteering is comparable with marathon running or cross-country skiing. To be successful in ski orienteering, the athlete must master all skiing techniques, classical and free technique as well as all general downhill and turning techniques. World Championships in ski orienteering are held every even numbered year, and the World Cup is organised in uneven numbered years. The programme includes competitions in long distance or medium distance, short or super-sprint distance, and relay for both women and men.

Those of us involved with nordic skiing however, look ahead and anticipate the coming of winter. Clubs around the state have helped to set up a calendar of ski orienteering qualifiers. Because the Empire State Games will be earlier than usual, there are fewer weekends available for qualifying, so it is important for competitors to plan ahead, to insure that they can get to the necessary races. Last year we used a points list system to rank and qualify competitors. We will continue to do this again this year, but we will be using a different system. Points will be awarded to all finishers, ranging from 10 points for first place to one point for those in sixth place and beyond. It is felt that this system will provide better competitive incentives, as well as encouraging more participation. Phil Hawkes-Teeter will be compiling the list this year and point totals will be maintained and posted to the Empire Orienteering Club site. Questions regarding the points list may be directed to him at philht@poboxes.com or 518-872-1993. Race results should be sent promptly to him at PO Box 8, Berne, NY 12023, and no later than February 10th.

Sorry, we have not enough snow on our event area for the alpencup orienteering event next weekend at this time and the weather forecast for the next days is very warm weather and rain up to 2000 m.
