Scores of patents for railbike systems were filed between 1880 and 1920 around the world. Railbikes were once used by railroad companies for track checking, moving workers at work sites as well as going for assistance when the locomotives broke down. Telegraph companies also used railbikes to maintain telegraph lines that often followed railways. In the Midwest and other regions with sufficient winds, workers using railbikes sometimes put up sails to power them along the tracks. Like its contemporary, the bicycle, railbike design went into decline with the advent of the internal combustion engine and the automobile. A few independently minded designers and tinkerers kept the concept alive for the last 90 years and today there is a resurgence of interest in railbiking.

The beauty was at times overwhelming. Only on the rails for a few minutes and I was treated with the sight of Buck Pond (left). Below, the bridge over the River Beaver. I carried my sleeping bag, clothes for any kind of weather, food, toiletries, tools, camera, binoculars, three bottles of water and two bottles of my favorite beer. The Stillwater Resevoir. Here I folded the rig to ride throught the settlement of Beaver River by road, fearing a possible unwelcome for railbikers. Here come Sudjai and Dick Bentley to greet me mid-ride. Heading home, southbound beauty! M I got out a topographic map and sure enough there was a railroad running from Utica to Lake Placid directly through the town of Tupper Lake. It may keep the name from the highways, but it originated from trains. Take Vincennes, a small town between Evansville and Terre Haute that was the capital of Indiana in the state's days as a territory. According to an article from Trains Magazine, in 1998 CSX ran 60 trains through the town of 18,701 people every day. That's an average of about five trains an hour. Elsewhere in Indiana, abandoned railroads sit dilapidated, no longer of any use and too expensive to remove. It is surprising that in a state with so much rail, that the sport of railbiking hasn't caught on more rapidly.

I am happy that cyclists have so many neat and interesting rides to choose from, and participate in. They are indeed great exercise. However, when my spouse returns from these adventures, he resembles something our two cats have found outside and decided to play with indoors. "How was the ride?" I cheerfully offer. Smiling, with beads of less-than-fragrant perspiration still lingering on his cycling outfit, my spouse replies "Oh, it was GREAT! Three people showed up, only one flat tire and if it wasn't for the fact that I bonked twice and had to pepper-spray a Chihuahua, it would have been perfect!" He then collapses with great drama, on the foot of our bed. I am always so happy to see that he has enjoyed himself so much. It never ceases to amaze me, that with all the club-sponsored rides we have, that more folks do not participate in them. They seem to have a cycling gene in their biological makeup, which automatically overrides all thought processes that tell them "Hey, it's the weekend and I really need to get caught up on some much-needed sleep!" I also know, that if I were a cyclist (and I very much respect those of you who are), I would wait until Spring or Summer, when at least daylight is abundant in those early-morning hours.
