Extractions: Andre the Giant was truly a one of a kind performer. Although his monolithic proportions were sometimes over-exagerated by promoters who billed him as standing 7'4, and later, 7'5, he was without a doubt the overall largest professional athlete ever to compete in any sport. But there was much more to this one of a kind performer than just his size, and he rose to previously unimagined levels of fame and mainstream notoriety. Although he passed away on Jan. 29,1993, his legacy and influence will be felt in this sport forever... Andre The Giant was born Andre Rousimoff in a small farming community in France on May 19, 1946. Over time, it became obvious that the young Andre was, to say the least, not like other children. Although born of "normal" sized parents, he reportedly reached 6`3 and weighed 200 lbs. by the time he was twelve. The "gentle giant" was the ultimate, unbeatable equalizer for regional fan favorites. Wrestling fans always knew in the back of their mind's that if things ever looked too bleak for the "good guys", that Andre could (and frequently did) come in and straighten the territory out with 1 or 2 matches. It was a winning formula for many promoters; when the top face had his hands too full with the local heels, Andre would be called in (to the delight of the fans) and Good would always prevail over Evil.

Why are people drawn to this fake amd brutal A sport? A. Professional wrestling is a live action cartoon where revenge, betrayal, greed, sex, and pride are woven into staged plots featuring lewd, crude, violent, elaborately costumed, steroid-enhanced giants. This spectacle, promoted by Ted Turner s World Championship Wrestling and Vince Mc Mahon s World Wrestling Federation, has nothing, of course, to do with the sport of wrestling. Professional wrestling is a $100 million a year entertainment industry that attracts 35 million people a week, a large proportion of whom are children. What s the appeal? Ask a hundred fans and you may get as many answers. However, some quite interesting insight can be found in two critiques of the phenomenon. One, by Eric Zengota, is titled A Archetypal Images in Professional Wrestling reprinted in Psyche and Sports , 1994, Chiron Publications, from Quadrant: The Journal of Contemporary Jungian Thought . The other A Pro Wrestling and The End of History

Extractions: NYS Independent Professional Wrestling reform View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: NYS Athletic Commission New York State is unquestionably the toughest states to run a professional wrestling event. The policies set fourth by the NYS Professional Wrestling Health and Safety Act are as follows: The above guidelines are without a doubt the strictest regulation on professional wrestling in the country. The above costs may put the promoter in the red by approximately $1,500 before the show even starts. There are at least 45 other states in the country that have little or no regulations on professional wrestling shows. New York State has lightened up their regulations somewhat. They no longer require wrestlers to be licensed to wrestle in NYS and do not require and additional $10,000 surety bond. I believe these regulations hinder the business of independent professional wrestling in New York State. Please support us in changing some of these policies in order to let independent professional wrestling thrive in New York State.
Extractions: TRIBUTE PAGE From these humble roots grew an enjoyment of professional wrestling that has lasted a lifetime. I've had many favorite wrestlers over the years, but the ones listed on this page are from the early "classic" era of the 1960's and 1970's. Wrestling changed dramatically in the 1980's when Vince McMahon transformed it from a back alley sideshow on the fringes of American society into the commercial and mainstream phenomenon it is today. I'll have to thank him for that because the success of Champions of the Galaxy is due in part to the continued popularity of professional wrestling. So here's a tribute to my three favorite wrestlers of the 1960's and 1970's! Even though there was a wrestling federation in Cleveland (where I lived) called the NWF, these three wrestlers are best known for wrestling in Detroit. Saturday evenings were great. There was the NWF show on TV at 6:00 and the Detriot show on at 7:00. The matches were lousy, but we didn't know better. In those days they would have a star fight a bum just to showcase the star and set up the big match at the arena later in the week. It's not like today where you get great matches free on Monday nights. By the way, all three wrestlers listed below have been recently rated among the top 100 wrestlers of the century by Inside Wrestling magazine.

"I got down low and took his legs out," said Franken afterwards... The trouble started when several supporters of fringe presidential candidate Lyndon Larouche began shouting accusations at Dean. Franken emerged from the crowd and charged one male protester, grabbing him with a bear hug from behind and slamming him onto the floor. "I was a wrestler so I used a wrestling move," Franken said. Extractions: Wrestling My father wrestled in college. He passed on his interest in wrestling to me. I studied Judo as a boy, but a back injury at the age of seventeen prevented me from participating in Judo or wrestling afterwards. Professional wrestling was a mainstay of American television in the 1950s. My family regularly watched professional wrestling on television. We knew the matches were booked, with endings predermined, but this did not detract from our enjoyment of the matches as entertainment. I still remember Gorgeous George, Carpentier, O'Connor, Rocca, Gagne, the Masked Assassins, the Kangaroos, the Crusher, the Bruiser, Ernie Ladd, Sailor Thomas, Bockwinkle, Hennig, and many other stars of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. For many years Chicago was a professional wrestling stronghold, with both the AWA and WWA regularly holding major cards at the Chicago Stadium and sometimes at the ball parks. I have always been a fan of heels like Nick Bockwinkle and Ric Flair who could execute all kinds of wrestling moves as well as "dirty" tricks. Flair and Bockwinkle kept themselves in great shape without looking like steroid monsters. They delivered great interviews. They drew tremendous heat from the crowds. I also enjoyed the wrestling of Verne Gagne, Antonina Rocca, Eduard Carpentier, Billy Robinson, Rick Steamboat, Wilbur Snyder, and other "scientific" wrestlers. I am also a fan of "crazy" wrestlers like Cactus Jack, whose ability to take bumps is second to none, and whose interview style is inspired. Unfortunately he doesn't get much chance to demonstrate this ability in the WWF with his "Mankind" gimic.
