Tampa, Florida: 1943-1957 The first volume of this series covers the period between 1943 and 1957, the post-war years that saw the rise of pro wrestling in Tampa ... a city that would become a hub of exciting wrestling action in the later, modern age of pro wrestling. The early '50s featured a transformation of wrestling into the style that would become popular in the '60s and '70s. This was an era that saw the promotion bring in all of the big stars ... Buddy Rogers, Don Eagle, Gorgeous George, Mr. Moto, Lou Thesz, The Great Togo, Argentina Rocca, Baron Leone, Gino Garibaldi, Hans Schmidt ... and unknown young men who were trying to make a name for themselves in the squared circle ... like Eddie Gossett (Eddie Graham), Ray Stevens and Dick Steinborn. This was the era when Tampa mat fans witnessed the area's first live TV card featuring Harry Smith vs. Chris Zaharias, Mae Young vs. Phyllis Hoffman, and Ray Stevens vs. Bennie Trudell. Plus, it was a time when Ella Waldek, Dot Dotson, Betty Hawkins, and many other ladies were featured in the main event as the reigning Florida Women's champion.

Max Von Sydow character in "Hannah and Her Sisters," 1986 "Although professional wrestling matches are reportedly as fixed as the romances of Helen Trent, 20,335 customers jammed Madison Square Garden last night to watch hefty matadors grunt, groan, pull hair, knock heads, and generally behave like Mau Maus."
Extractions: With all of the recent talk of an upcoming Goldberg vs. Austin dream match taking place, it was very unlikely that Austin would have came to terms with Dream Stage by the 5/8 HUSTLE-3 show, and that didn't happen, but lately there have been rumors going around that Austin would be making several appearances which would in turn lead to a big match, possibly in July when DSE plans on running the 4th installment of the HUSTLE series. While DSE is probably the closest to inking Austin, New Japan's director Fumihiko Uei is also heavily interested in signing Austin for New Japan. Goldberg had been wanting to do a singles match with Austin ever since the two became friends and for the past few years, and even moreso recently, they have been talking together pretty extensively regarding a match that could be done in Japan and broadcast on PPV in the United States. DSE already promotes PRIDE and Bushido events on U.S. PPV, so promoting something like one of their HUSTLE shows (which would feature Austin vs. Goldberg) wouldn't be much of a problem whereas it may be for other companies. Plans for HUSTLE DVDs in the U.S. are already in the works, and have been dubbed over with English commentary.

In its purported rules and competitions, it apes the convention of sport A sport consists of an everyday activity carried out with a purpose and in an environment different from everyday: for competition, enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of skill, or some combination of these. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess. In its purported rules and competitions, it apes the convention of sport. It originated in the days of travelling carnival shows. During its earlier history, professional wrestling promoters and performers claimed that the competition was real, and varying fractions of the audience have believed this to be the case (a situation known as kayfabe). Any pretence to be a sporting competition was dropped in the 1990s, when Vince McMahon's WWF wrestling organisation began describing its events as "sports entertainment".

Extractions: Perhaps you could help to settle an argument I am having with my coworkers: Is professional wrestling real or fake? Being a wrestling fan for many years I know that the outcome of certain matcheslike when a wrestler is about to leave an organizationare determined ahead of time, and I know that a lot of moves are "choreographed" so the athletes don't get killed. Other than that, I say the outcome of most matches is not pre-determined and that the wrestlers really are trying to beat each other. The consensus around the office seems to be that the whole thing is a sham and the outcome of every match is already decided before anyone even steps into the ring. Please help! bigdaddy In his recently aired special The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling (aired on an evil network we shall NOT name here), writer and producer Chris Mortensen likens modern-day professional wrestling to an addictive sports soap opera, albeit a soap opera viewed by over 25 million Americans a week. In tracing the history of professional wrestling in America, Mortensen describes how early 20th century wrestling matches could last as long as 5 hoursnot conducive to most attention spans. Adapting a more flamboyant and intriguing style, wrestling became more vaudevillian and was a staple of traveling carnivals and the like, until the First Golden Age of Wrestling, which began with the advent of television. The interview segment was created, and now wrestlers could expound upon their personasranging from Gorgeous George, who came to the ring wearing gaudy robes, golden bobby pins, and golden ringlets on his hair (which he had shaved as per a condition in a match he lost) to Classy Fred Blassie, who ridiculed the fans by calling them pencil-necked geeks."
