Å SPILLE PETANQUE Å lære seg å spille petanque tar omtrent 10 minutter, men man skal holde på i mange år innen man behersker alle taktiske og tekniske finesser. Petanque er en utpreget presisjonssport kombinert med utallige taktiske variasjoner. Man spiller enten trippel, dobbel eller singel. I trippel har hver spiller to kuler, mens man i dobbel og singel spiller med tre kuler hver. Kulene er av metall, og man spiller på grus. Man kaster kulene sine mot en liten målkule (gris). Hver kule man plasserer nærmere grisen enn motstanderens beste kule gir ett poeng. Det laget som begynner lager en ring mellom 35 og 50 cm. i diameter, som det spilles fra. Grisen kastes mellom 6 og 10 meter.

Therefor the farthermost place from Finland except small part of the Antarctica is New Zealand. When I in June-July 2001 visited New Zealand then of course I had to check how Petanque is working in that part of the earth. New Zealand is one of the 52 countries which belong to the International Federation. In the year 2000 there was 495 licensed players when in Finland it was 708. Based on information I got at there they have now played Petanque for about 10 years and the number of registered players is about 1500. New Zealand joined the International Federation at 1995 while Finland joined already 1983. At specially in north island you can play Petanque through the whole year. In south island it is cooler and they ski at higher places on winter. Based on Internet information there are tens of clubs and in Auckland about twelve.

Extractions: We play on Sunday afternoons all year, and on fine Wednesday evenings in summer, on our terrain next to the "Rising Sun" Harvester pub/restaurant on the corner of Cobham Road and Guildford Road, Leatherhead (see map ). Most of these playing sessions are informal, but there are eight club competitions a year for which prizes are awarded. The club belongs to the Southern Region of the , and members regularly take part in open competitions, mostly in Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire but sometimes as far away as Guernsey . A Leatherhead team has been promoted from the fourth to the first division in their first three seasons in the Southern Region six-a-side league . Two Leatherhead teams (the Moles and the Badgers) have also been very successful in the North Downs League Every year, we visit or are visited by our twin club from Amfreville-la-Mivoie , near Rouen.
