    Extractions: Links Ski touring ENSC style is not a fashion activity but it it is still expensive to acquire all the kit and you may well want to spread your expenditure overtime and to put off buying equipment until you are clear what type of nordic skiing suits you. You may already have equipment from other activities which will be adequate to get you started. The basic kit list for a Winter weekend identifies what clothing you will need. Basically, if it will keep you warm and dry in fairly extreme conditions, it will do to get you started. Cotton clothing is not advised as it retains no warmth when wet. The one you have got will probably do. Although ideally you need a sack without side pockets and with side straps.This will allow you to fix your skis to the sack for those inevitable occasions when you have to walk to or from the snow line. A small summer sack will probably not have the capacity to hold the spare clothing and other essentials for a winter day out. Until you have found your feet and decided exactly what type of nordic touring or telemarking suits you it is sensible to hire your gear. The Club has a

From easy going and intimate classically groomed trails suitable for the whole family to the most significant Nordic superhighway in the nation, the American Birkebeiner Trail, the depth of choice is almost overwhelming. Northwest Wisconsin is blessed with over a million of acres of public land, primarily in our County and State Forests and the Chequamegon National Forest. Many trail systems are essentially free, but do accept skier donations or request parking fees. Please support these trail systems by donating generously. Fee based trail systems pride themselves on offering a quality skiing experience and your fees will insure that trails are regularly and conscientiously maintained. Good grooming is very necessary and expensive. Your fees and contributions will not only insure that the trails are groomed regularly, but that these trails will continue to exist. Cross country skiers are important to Northwest Wisconsin, but a nearly invisible part of the regional economy when compared to other winter sport enthusiasts. We can all be ambassadors for the sport and help elevate the image and visibility of cross country skiing. When you visit the area, be sure to let the businesses you patronize know that you are a cross country skier and that is the reason you are visiting the region. A little PR will go a long way.

Links Nordic skiing is the original form of skiing, and first evolved in Scandinavia The nordic discipline originated in Scandinavia as a form of transport during the long winter months. It uses equipment that is relatively light, often using wood, foam injection and plastic for the skis and leather or plastic boots. The toe of the boot is fixed to the ski using a binding, and the heel is free to lift. The free heel allows ease of travel over varied terrain. This is aided by using skins or wax on the ski bases either to grip or glide (depending on the discipline). You can go nordic skiing virtually anywhere there is snow-space, in the local park, along forest trails, up mountains or through glens. Certain restrictions may apply to access but your local club will be able to point you in the right direction. Anyone can participate, young or old - the input requirement is not necessarily high unless you want to get involved in the athletic, competitive or touring levels of the sport.
