Extractions: Softball Softball is an official Special Olympics team sport. Athletes can play slow pitch, tee-ball, or compete in individual skills contests with events that involve the basic fundamentals of softball. Base race, bat for distance, team skills softball, and team skills assessment test are meaningful competitions for developmental athletes. Athletes of all ability levels can participate in Special Olympics softball. Players are classified by their scores on the softball skills assessment test (base running, throwing, fielding, and batting). In tee-ball, the playing area conforms to FIS standards, but the bases may be modified to a distance of 60 foot. The distance from home plate to the pitcher’s rubber may be modified to a minimum of 14 meters (45’ 11 1/4"). A neutral zone will be marked in arc of 14 meters from home plate. Any batted ball that does not cross the line will be designated a foul ball. A coaches’ circle will be located 3 m (9’ 10 1/4") beyond second base and made with a 1.8 m (5’ 11") diameter. One coach from the defensive team may be allowed to stand in this circle while his team is on the field.
