Extractions: Welcome to this exciting sport which combines the grace and beauty of sailing with the speed and thrills of motor racing. Modern sand or land yachts can be propelled by winds of less than 10 mph and can travel at between 2 and 3 times the speed of the wind, reaching speeds in excess of 60 mph. It is far from easy to convey the thrill of sailing a deserted beach whilst harnessing the power of the wind so..... Land Yachting is one of only a few sports where women can compete on equal terms with men, and children with adults. Strength does not really come into it, however weight is one of the critical factors. Land Yachting can be for anyone, with ages ranging from 10 to 70 years. Two main classes of yacht are sailed in this country, Class III with 7.35 square meters of sail and Class V with 5.00 square meters.

Devon Kiters Land Yachting involves moving along the ground at whatever speed the wind will allow. This is another of those sports where men and women can have equal fun. The speed at which you can travel depends on the strength of the wind, the weight of the person and the size of the sail. You may choose to buy 2nd hand to start with, or the more talented/hard up may build a yacht, there are many websites with plans and parts. Land yachting is not too difficult to learn. In light winds on a large, hard surface landyachts are very easy to learn to sail. There are far fewer things to deal with than a normal sail boat: just a mainsheet to trim the sail and foot steering. When the wind picks up the boat gets to be a handful and more experience is required. Tacking down wind is hard to master, especially in light winds when it is especially easy to stall the sail. Racing is what sorts out the good sailors from the great ones. The best sailors typically have years of experience, often on both the water and dirt.

Devon Kiters There are many different types of land sailing - on surf-wax we aim to show you the sailing which happens on beaches. But given that you need a pretty big beach without to many pedestrians, it is not going to be a main stream sport. And you need to have some level of skill before you can take to the beach for fear of colliding with rocks, dogs, people and any other obstacles which appear from nowhere to challenge you. Most people who landsail tend to use a windsurfing type sail and then fashion some kind of board to stand on, or a buggy to sit in.
