While the teams themselves, their coaches and supporters knew that the US squads had trained hard, and had developed a great deal since the last international competition, many others anticipated that the US teams were still in the early stages of development. The United States has traditionally trailed the powerhouses of Europe and Oceania in the game of Kayak Polo. This year, however, both the men's and women's teams demonstrated that the US has been learning its lessons. While the teams have not yet achieved the prowess of the top teams in the sport, the showing for the United States was the best performance to date at a World Championships, and had many of the more established teams taking notice.

Kayak Polo is a fun fast-paced game that hones paddling skills while developing teamwork. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. No experience is necessary and there is No Cost We play year-round on Lake Washington. The only requirements are you must be able to swim. Choose from two different games and locations Tuesdays 5:45 PM at the Waterfront Activity Center , Southeast of Husky Stadium off of Montlake Boulevard. Visit the University Kayak Club's Kayak Polo page for more information. Gear: UKC members can use club gear. Non-UKC members will have to provide their own kayaking gear, i.e. a whitewater or polo boat, paddle, PFD, spray skirt and helmet. Goals and a polo ball will be provided for all. We play with the international rules. Wednesdays 5:45 PM at Marsh Park in Kirkland . Boats and paddles are borrowed from other players on a first come first serve basis. Kayak (Canoe) Polo is a hybrid between sprint paddling and water polo. We are allowed to tackle anyone who has possesion of the ball, and we are permitted to use our paddles to control the ball. I play every Monday nights in Richmond at JFK High School's Pool; the pool is just West of I-80 off Cutting Blvd, go under the highway and make a left at the third light. Usually there is a beginners session from 7-8PM and then we try and have some non-competitive games from 8-10PM. I also try and get out to Foster City on Sundays and practice with alot of the more advanced players as well (this is not to say that I am an advanced player myself, I just like to get the extra playing time). For the past couple of months, I have also been going out to the Berkeley Marina on Wednesday and Friday afternoons around 5PM to surf and practice ball and boat techniques. "They just sprint back and forth, back and forth, back and forth," Southstone says. Though their minds are on the game, they're also learning to paddle, says longtime player Kristi Hug, 31. "You accidentally learn a lot of boathandling skills," she says. With the game as a motivator, kayakers perfect their braces, rolls and other maneuvers that will help them on a river. The same can not be said for strategic skills. Players tend to mill around following the ball like 6-year-olds playing soccer.
