If the goddess were to grant Khudu Karmakar the awesome powers he expected from a virgin's death, the victim had to be willing, had to know what was happening, watch the knife, and not stop it. But even tranquilizers couldn't lull 15-year-old Manju Kumari to her fate. In his police confession, Karmakar says his wife, daughter and three accomplices had to gag Manju and pin her down on the earthen floor before the shrine. In ritual order, Karmakar wafted incense over her, tore off her blue skirt and pink T shirt, shaved her, sprinkled her with holy water from the Ganges and rubbed her with cooking fat. Then chanting mantras to the "mother" goddess Kali, he sawed off Manju's hands, breasts and left foot, placing the body parts in front of a photograph of a blood-soaked Kali idol. Police say the arcs of blood on the walls suggest Manju bled to death in minutes. Human sacrifice has always been an anomaly in India. Even 200 years ago, when a boy was killed every day at a Kali temple in Calcutta, blood cults were at odds with a benign Hindu spiritualism that celebrates abstinence and vegetarianism. But Kali is different. A ferocious slayer of evil in Hindu mythology, the goddess is said to have an insatiable appetite for blood. With the law on killing people more strictly enforced today, ersatz substitutes now stand in for humans when sacrifice is required. Most Kali temples have settled on large pumpkins to represent a human body; other followers slit the throats of two-meter-tall human effigies made of flour, or of animals such as goats.

Extractions: Holy Mother As the consecrated wife and spiritual companion of Sri Ramakrishna and a spiritual teacher and luminary in Her own right, Sri Sarada Devi, known worldwide as the Holy Mother, is a unique phenomenon in the realm of sacred beings. Perhaps the testament of Sri Ramakrishna Himself is the best recourse to take when attempting to describe Her. Once, when She was massaging His feet, She asked Him what He thought of Her. He explained to Her that the same Mother (Bhavatarini/Kali) that was in the Dakshineswar Temple and the same Mother that had given Him birth was now sitting before Him holding His feet. Though admittedly, this was an assessment coming from a being who saw the Divine Mother everywhere, more specific praise was forthcoming. In later years, when both of Them had discovered the full divine potential in each other, He was heard to say that the Goddesses Kali, Sarasvati and Lakshmi had manifested in the present age as Sri Sarada Devi. This type of adoration coming from such a source is revealing. However, one does not have to look far before a boundless ocean of praise is discovered, written and spoken not only by monks, householder devotees and the public at large, but also by those who lived with Her daily. One such person, who later became a swami in the Ramakrishna Order, wrote of Her in a hymn:

Extractions: by Suzin Green There was a time I earned my living teaching music, and that was when the hibiscus, a gift from a student, came into my life. It was small and to my eyes, a rather plain-looking plant, set in a green plastic pot. I had no idea it was a hibiscus, the plant whose large red blooms are sacred to the goddess Kali, the fierce sword-wielding goddess of the Indian tradition. I set it in a sunny spot, watered it once a week, and gave it a bit of plant food now and then. Beyond that I didn't pay it much attention. To tell the truth, the plant bored me. It didn't have the lacy elegance of the asparagus fern, the lush foliage of the ficus, the sexy glamour of the gardenia. It grew slowly, rather humbly, and for two years never showed a bud. Until by chance, I happened to transplant it. I was re-potting some other plants that day and thought I'd transfer it from its little green container into one of my newly emptied large clay pots. This was an aesthetic decision. I preferred the look of red clay to green plastic. The plant looked way too small for the pot, however within a week, it doubled in size. Soon after that the buds came. There was clearly a lesson here about room to grow, benign neglect, and not seeing what is right before one's eyes. Nevertheless, the plant forgave my triple-sin of omission. Within three weeks of the transplant, it greeted me with an incredible flower, brilliant red, five perfect petals opening to the morning. It was only then that I realized this plant was a hibiscus. And that it had something to teach me about tending living things.
