After all, theres nothing easier than lacing up a pair of running shoes and heading outdoors. But jogging is not without risks. A little knowledge and preparation can go a long way to preventing injuries. Injuries generally fall into two groups: chronic ailments and acute injuries. Seventy-five percent of jogging injuries result from overdoing it. The body begins to feel the stress of the constant pounding and wear and tear. Most chronic injuries affect the tendons, ligaments and bones, as well as the muscles and tissues that surround the muscles. Joggers knee, shin splints, tendonitis and plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) are some of the most common injuries. People who jog six miles a week or less tend to have the fewest injuries. Those who accumulate over 12 miles a week have the most injuries. Many chronic injuries are caused by running too far or too fast. One of the keys to preventing these injuries is proper preparation. Warming up your muscles before you jog can decrease your risk of injury. Try jogging at a slower pace for the first few minutes or precede your jog with a brisk walk. At the end of a run, cool down by slowing your pace or walking.
