Extractions: Illustration: John Shakespeare TFF's request for a sporting slant on Ozwords, as in oft-used Australian words that can have their meaning altered by the changing of one letter - a la "flatypus", for any squished wildlife on the road - drew an enormous response from TFF readers. Simone Wajon from Waverley cites for example "turfing": the art of flying down grass hills on torn-up cardboard boxes. Frank Starr, on the other hand, nominated "The Fitz Viles". No one likes a smarty-pants, Frank. Trust me, I know. Here, though, are the best of the rest . . . Hurling : Pub sport loosely based on the Scottish curling, involving sliding full beer glasses along a bar to be emptied by fellow competitors. Extractions: Lesson #1: "What The Feck Is Hurling?" Hurling is an ancient game from the Ice Age, but it didn't officially exist until approximately 1889 or thereabouts. As Liam Griffin, the former Wexford hurling manager and amateur poet, once described it: "Hurling is the Riverdance of sport." NB: This doesn't mean that it involves loads of tapdancing by poncy blokes in black mini-skirts (or girls either). Hurling is actually a venerable outdoor activity, a traditional game of immense skill in which people of all ages beat the crap out of each other with quite big sticks. It also involves a ball (called a "Sliotar"), two goalposts (shaped like a "H", or a "h" if they need repairing), and a very muddy field named after a dodgy bishop. The ball is about the same size as a tennis ball, only much heavier if you get whacked with one. If you get the ball over the bar but between the posts (as if they extended infinitely into the air), you get one point. When you do this, you get a damn big cheer and people slap you on the back and say "Fair play". If you get it under the H, you get a goal. This is worth three points. So you get three times as much cheers. More about cheering techniques in lesson six or seven. There are 15 players in each team, until several of them are sent off. The players' sticks are called "hurleys" (after which Elizabeth Hurley's family gets its name). These sticks have a broad bit at one end called the bas (boss). The rest is called "the rest". Incidentally, one of Ireland's former taoisigh (but not Jack Lynch) was also known as The Bas, and also sometimes called The Crook.
History Of Hurling A Brief History of hurling by Lady Elisabetta Maldestro. You might think that it would be easy to trace the origins of a sport. hurling is one of these sports. http://www.klotz.org/SCA/mudpuppy/history_of_hurling.htm
Extractions: by Lady Elisabetta Maldestro You might think that it would be easy to trace the origins of a sport. If you are researching a modern sports it easy; most of them organized in the late nineteenth century. If you are examining a local pastime an area's landscape should answer your questions, for instance the Nigerian plains inspiring running races. But if you're researching an ancient sport, tracing the origin is almost impossible. Hurling is one of these sports. Similar to a game depicted in ancient Egyptian cave drawings, dated circa 2000 BCE, hurling is considered to be the oldest Irish game. The first written record of this pre-Christian sport is a mention in the Brehon Laws, compiled during the 5th century. No one knows where the sport originated from and whether or not it was native to Ireland or brought over from one of the many tribes that conquered or settled in the Emerald Isle, but there are two theories that link the ancient Irish to Egypt. First, and most probably, is that hurling traveled with the nomadic tribe known as the Celts when they first landed in Ireland around 600 BCE. Linguistically the Celts belong to an Indo-European culture, and it is known that they once lived in the Semitic areas
