The game, mostly played in Ireland , is considered to be one of the fastest team sports. It bears some resemblance to shinty , which is mainly played in Scotland . Another version of the game for women is known as camogie The objective of the game is to score more points than the opposing team. Scoring is by driving a small hard 65 mm diam. leather coated ball ( sliotar ) through the oponents goal. There is a set of goalposts at each end of the 140-meter-long playing field, each team attacking their opponent's goal. These are like a set of "H" posts like in rugby but with a net on the bottom section like in soccer . A goal ( , valued at three points) is awarded when the ball is played under the crossbar (located at 7 ft above the ground) and into the net. One point is scored when the ball is played between the upper part of the goal posts over the crossbar(posts are 7 yards apart). Earlier this year Notre Dame became the first college in the United States with a hurling program, according to the Irish graduate student who organized the program. Hurling, which this fall will become an official club sport, is considered by many to be the fastest and oldest field sport on earth. Played by the Celts as early as 600 B.C., it's Ireland's national sport and remains immensely popular there. But in America, hurling clubs typically are found only in major cities. The Notre Dame club got going last fall when members of the campus Gaelic Society, founded in 2002 to exhibit Irish traditions on campus, began practicing side-by-side with people playing catch with softballs and Frisbees on the lawns of North Quad.

It is Europe's oldest field game. When the Celts came to Ireland as the last ice age was receding, they brought with them a unique culture, their own language, music, script and unique pastimes. One of these pastimes was a game now called hurling. It features in Irish folklore to illustrate the deeds of heroic mystical figures and it is chronicled as a distinct Irish pastime for at least 2,000 years. Hurling is played on a pitch approximately 137m long and 82m wide. The goalposts are the same shape as on a rugby pitch, with the crossbar lower than a rugby one and slightly higher than a soccer one. You may strike the ball on the ground, or in the air. Unlike hockey, you may pick up the ball with your hurley and carry it for not more than four steps in the hand. After those steps you may bounce the ball on the hurley and back to the hand, but you are forbidden to catch the ball more than twice. To get around this, one of the skills is running with the ball balanced on the hurley To score, you put the ball over the crossbar with the hurley or under the crossbar and into the net by the hurley for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points. Each team consists of fifteen players, lining out as follows: 1 goalkeeper, three full-backs, three half-backs, two midfielders, three half-forwards and three full-forwards. Records show evidence that hurling was a regular pasttime in Ireland for well over 2,000 years. In fact the first recorded reference to hurling dates to the Battle of Moytura, near Cong in County Mayo (in the West of Ireland) in 1272 BC between the native Fir Bolg and the invading Tuatha De Danann. When both sides were preparing for battle they decided to have a hurling contest instead, between twenty-seven of the best players from each side. Both sides fought a bloody match and in the end when they were bruised and broken the match finished with the he Fir Bolg victorious who then slew the Tuatha De Danann. It is known that the Tailtean Games, said to be the oldest recorded organised sports in the world, were held in Ireland as far back as approximately 1800BC, and that they went on until 1180AD. Hurling was likely to have been a central part of those games.
