The Center has a "fleet" of 9 handcycles, and adds to this number each season. What is a handcycle? A handcycle is a three wheeled cycle that is powered by using your arms to turn the crank. Handcycles fall into two catagories, upright, or recumbent. You sit in an upright model in a manner similar to a wheelchair. In a recumbent model, your torso may be reclined somewhat, and your legs are out in front of you. Each has advantages. Uprights are easier to transfer to, and their higher profile makes them more visible in traffic. Leaners or recumbants are faster, have more gearing, are lighter, and are pretty much the choice for distance or competition riding. Leaner vs. pivot steering All uprights pivot steer, that is the front wheel turns, while the rest of the bike remains upright. Leaners are turned in part by leaning the cycle, which pivots at hingepoints. Some leaners can be problematic if you have concerns with trunk stability. At least one manufacturer, Invacare's Top End cycle, has a traditional pivot steering mechanism.
