"The history of Sports Acrobatics goes back all the way to the time of the ancient Greeks. Imprints of acrobatics exercises can be found on ancient amphora's vases and monuments. The word "acrobat" originates from the Greek language. China, too, has a rich history of Sports Acrobatics. At the end of the 18th century the sport started to flourish in Europe, especially with the popularity of the circus. As with many other sports, acro flourished in the 20th century. Acrobatic exercises were not only included in acrobatic gymnastics, but in numerous other sports, too. Today, there are various competitive sports in which acrobatic acts play a very important role. Examples are diving, trampoline, rock-n-roll dancing, ski-acrobatics, ice skating, artistic roller skating, and vaulting on horseback.

Modern gymnastics, as regulated by the FIG (Federation International de Gymnastique) incorporates six distinct disciplines: Of these disciplines, the two subdisciplines of artistic gymnastics are the best known, having been competed in every modern Summer Olympic Games The discipline of rhythmic gymnastics is competed only by women, and involves the performance of five separate routines with the use of five props (ball, ribbon, hoop, clubs, role) on a floor area, with a much greater emphasis on the aesthetic rather than the acrobatic. Rhythmic routines are scored out of a possible 30 points. Sports aerobics involves the performance of routines by individuals or pairs, emphasising strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness rather than acrobatic or balance skills. Routines are performed on a small floor area and last 90 seconds (? - check this), being judged out of a total of (check how many points is maximum).

It gets this designation from the International Olympic Committee and the International Gymnastics Federation. USA Gymnastics sets the rules and policies that govern gymnastics in this country. Training and selecting the U.S. Gymnastics Teams for the Olympics and World Championships are just two of the many responsibilities of USA Gymnastics. The not-for-profit organization was established in Tucson, Ariz., in 1963. During the mid-1960s the U.S. had scarcely 7,000 athletes competing a limited schedule. The only major international events for gymnasts were the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games. Today, more than 65,000 athletes are registered in competitive programs through USA Gymnastics. USA Gymnastics has more than 11,000 professional and instructor members. Approximately 3,000 competitions and events throughout the U.S. are sanctioned annually. USA Gymnastics is headquartered in Indianapolis, Ind., with several other sports' NGBs and has expanded very quickly in its 30-plus years. The original staff of three has now grown to approximately 40 employees, who maintain the following areas: Programs This department consists of men's, women's and rhythmic programs.
