Miscellaneous The Olympic games were eventually adopted and reborn throughout the world alternating the competition in a new country every 4 years, however, Pankration competition was not included. It is only because of the sparse historical records and the special interests of a few individuals that Pankration is having a rebirth in this generation. The current wave of "no holds barred" and pay per view fighting events has brought with it a curiosity and interest to it's ancient predecessor Pankration. Just as the boxing venue grew and evolved from ancient Greece to Madison square garden and the rest of the world, the skills, techniques, training methods, rules, attire and safety measures have also evolved. For the most part this evolution has been beneficial to the sport and it's participants. Now after centuries ancient Greek Pankration is getting the opportunity to become Modern Pankrationin the same way as it's brother boxing did. What is a modern day Pankratiast?

What is not so familiar, with the exception of modern boxing and wrestling, is the long tradition of combat arts that have arisen here on European soil. Foremost amongst these is the ancient Hellenic (Greek) martial art of 'Pankration': pronounced variously as; 'Pan-kray-shun' or 'Pan-krat-ion' depending upon the Greek dialect. The name itself is derived from two Greek root words: Pan meaning all and Kratos meaning strength, power or force . Therefore, Pankration was a martial combat art that included the use of any and all forms of technique and power. The later developments of boxing and wrestling were taken from the Pankration art and distilled into sports. Beginnings: The historical origins of Pankration disappear back into the mists of time, back to the Heroic age of Greece and the times of Homers Trojan War period (around 1300 BC). In legend, its founder was the hero and demi-god Hercules ( Heracles ) or sometimes Theseus: the famous hero who slew the Minotaur - the half man half bull monster in the Labyrinth at the palace of Knossos on the island of Crete.

Smith (U.S.) , Hung I-Mien, Chen Yun-ching and his brother Yun-chao, as well as Wu Shaolin (all of these in Taiwan) and the long time student of Wang Su-chin, Marnix Wells (now in London) as well as Rose Li (who was in Manchester and London) . Most of these are mentioned elsewhere in this site. In 1986 when I met Tim Geoghegan I became more aware of the Western side of martial arts - particularly the Celtic, as well as the wrestling, or grappling aspect. In fact it was Tim who emphasized to me that all of the ancient civilizations shared a common bond of experience and instincts. Tim had much to say about Cosmology from culture to culture and Shamanism. He introduced me to the work of Jacquetta Hawkes and Charles Muses as well as providing other conduits for me to unfold myself; mainly the work of Gurdjieff and Maurice Nicoll. In tradition, the Shaolin Temple martial art of China was introduced by the Indian Buddhist Patriarch and founder of Ch'an' (Zen) Buddhism; Bodhidharma (450-523 AD). Bodhidharma known in Chinese as 'Dat-Mo' was the 28th Patriarch in the dhyana (Sanskrit for meditation and hence Ch'an and Zen) Buddhist tradition of India. He had been invited to China by the Emperor Wu, an ardent Buddhist. Bodhidharma later retired to the Shaolin Temple, and according to legend instructed the Monks there in a series of exercises that went on to form the basis of Shaolin Temple 'boxing'. Variously, these exercises are recorded as martial arts techniques and forms from India, or, simply calisthenics, as identified in the 'I Chin Ching' or "Muscle Changing Classic". Extant wall paintings and murals at the Honan Shaolin Temple in North East China show etnic Indian Monks sparring and training in boxing skills with Chinese Monks, supporting the view that Bodhidharma's exercises were in fact martial arts - the martial arts of his homeland - India. There are no records that chronicle the historical origins of Kalari Payat, only narrative accounts formatted as myth and legend. Most of these credit Kalari's origins to Lord Shiva, one of the three principle Gods of the Hindu pathenon.

Have you been following what has been going on in Greece? I dont know about you, but what we westerners call Greek Mythology is to the hard core Greeks, a religion unto itself. As an underdog supporter of separation of Church and State, I hope the Orthodox Christian majority will respect the religion that developed from Greek Mythology. To me, freedom is more important than truth, or in other words it springboards off knowledge, wisdom and truth in sequential order. The Asian respect for western culture during the Ching and even now, stemmed from basically the language of science, math. We all know we owe Greek culture when it comes to foundations of math. So; awhile back the magazine powers that be could not get enough of this UFC. What happened opened our eyes 360 degrees back to Greek Pankration. Nobody but heavyweight boxing champions of the world are paid the most for the least work. The transition of Gumby moves from little payday UFC to WCW and WWF, ala the luchadore cruiserweights merely created a reality contrast. For example, boxing has evolved over the years to about 17 weight divisions. No one remembers anyone except the heavyweight champion, albeit, there are a few organizations claiming they have the true champ, thus the belt unification trend now being set by Englands champ who unified the major belts from his title fight with Holyfield.

There are additional photos and new sections included. The quality of the book matches that of the content presented. Although there are many fighting skills that can be found in other martial arts systems, Arvanitis emphasizes the "core" pankration techniques by their classic Greek terms. Nice touch!! This book is well laid out and easy to follow. There is a wealth of material here from a man who has been an innovative force behind MMA since the early-1970s.
