Extractions: Goalball originated in Europe and is the only international team sport for the vision impaired played at the Paralympics. The game has been played at International level competition since its introduction at the Paralympics in 1976 and is also included in the World Championships for the Blind. Goalball is a unique team sport for the vision impaired, played by two teams of three players. All players are blind-folded to enable blind, vision impaired and sighted athletes to compete together (although in order to play in a national team, the athletes must be legally blind). New rule changes (1989) have made the sport a faster and more exciting game. Goalball can be played on any flat surface measuring 18m x 9m, but is best played on a polished wooden floor. The court is divided into two halves. Each half comprises three equal sections: Neutral Area, Landing Area and Team Area. Goals extend the full width of the court behind each team area. The course markings, including players position markings, are visibly marked with 5cm-width tape. String is laid under the tape to enable easier player orientation.

The game was introduced to the world in 1976 at the Paralympics in Toronto, Canada and the first world championships were held in Austria in 1978. Women first competed in goalball during the 1984 Paralympic Games in New York, USA. COMPETITORS: Goalball is open to athletes who are blind and partially sighted. While goalball competitors with varying degrees of sight compete together in open competition all competitors are required to wear "black-out" masks. The masks ensure that none of the competitors have any light perception or vision and as such compete on an equal footing in spite of varying degrees of sight. RULES: CLASSIFICATION: All blind and partially sighted athletes who meet the IBSA Classification guidelines are eligible to compete in the game of goalball.

Introduction To Goalball Introduction to goalball. This 536142). Characteristics of goalball. Asits name suggests goalball is a ball game; it is also a team game. http://www.paralympic.org/sports/sections/gb/introduction.htm
Extractions: Introduction to Goalball This introduction was supplied by David Lee of British Blind Sport whose Head Office is at 67 Albert Street, Rugby CV21 2SN, United Kingdom (telephone +44 1788 536142) As its name suggests Goalball is a ball game; it is also a team game. It has three characteristics which distinguish it from all team ball games played by sighted people. Firstly it is played with a ball which behaves like a rattle when in motion, so that its position can be located by listening. Secondly it is played on a court with tactile markings. This enables a player to determine his position on court and the direction in which he is facing, by feeling for the markings with his feet or his hands. Thirdly all players wear eyeshades to block out any residual sight so that the disadvantages of poor sight and no sight are equalised during play. The amount of time necessary to prepare to play goalball should not be underestimated. An 18m x 9m court has to be set in accordance with the pattern shown below. In tournament play all the lines are tactile, but for informal play only the orientation lines and the lines defining the team areas need be tactile, the other lines being just visibly marked. The teams areas are those parts of the court which are within three metres of the goal lines. The tactile markings are effected for tournament play by covering builder's line or cord with 'Sportsline' or similar high quality tape. For less formal situations, and for the benefit of beginners, much thicker clothes line is often used, and is taped down with 5cm wide decorator's masking tape. The twelve orientation marks within the playing areas are of lengths 150cm (4), 50cm (4) and 15cm (4). In marking court it is advisable to look first for permanent 18m x 9m markings for volleyball on the sportshall floor. If they exist, marking out is much easier than starting with no reference marks.

Extractions: Home Contact Info Schedule Announcements INTRODUCTION In response to demand within the Montreal Association for the Blind Transition Group (senior high school students support group), a league has been formed to practice the sport of Goalball recreationally. Our primary objective in setting up such a league was to preserve the recreational aspect that had been exhibited in past games. By keeping the league non-competitive we can essentially build on socializing between young blind and visually impaired clients of the MAB. ABOUT THE SPORT Goalball is a unique team sport for the visually impaired and blind, played by 2 teams of 5 players (of which only three per team can play at the same time). It is played on a court 9 meters in width and 18 meters in length with a smooth surface. All players are blindfolded to enable blind, visually impaired and sighted athletes to play together. The game is divided into two 7-minute halves. The ball is approximately the size of a basketball and contains noise bells. The object of the game is to roll the ball over your opponent's goal line using a bowling action. MISSION STATEMENT It has been expressed by many members of the Transition Group, that they enjoy being able to participate in a sport where their visual impairment does not put them at a disadvantage. It has also been shown that most of the members are not interested in becoming competitive players, but rather casual players. Our mission is to meet these needs. We aim to keep the league in the hands of the visually impaired and blind youth who will profit from it.
