Twenty elevated metal baskets catch the disc, much like holes in the ground catch golf balls. The goal is the same, to complete the course in the fewest number of shots. The course is short enough that a round can be played in an hour. The basic requirement for playing disc golf is remarkably simple. All you need is a golf disc that can be purchased at Olive's General store for about $15 and can be used for years to come. Disc golf is easy to learn. Most people understand the principles of traditional golf and these carry over into disc golf. Beginners invariably find throwing a Frisbee much easier than striking a golf ball. Entire families can play together! Kids love things that fly and modern golf discs are high tech aerodynamic marvels. Disc golf can also be played alone allowing great flexibility in scheduling. One important thing that traditional and disc golf have in common is that they are played in beautiful settings. The distinguishing characteristic of Sipapu's course is the way in which it travels along and across various ski runs and the Rio Pueblo. Utilizing a ski mountain offers limitless possibilities for pin placements. Sipapu has across-the-river shots, dramatic elevation changes, forests of trees and exquisite fairways like nowhere else.

The course winds along Silver Creek which flows into Lake Michigan between hole number 12 and 13. The picturesque landscape makes you feel like you are just strolling through the park; golf discs in hand of course. Local business sponsors were secured in the summer of 2000 and the first round of 18 was played on Halloween. Some of the courses' interesting features include: hole 4 playing over Silver Creek, 6 holes along the creek, a 337' hole on a 15% up hill grade, hole nine's basket planted at the edge of an 80 foot drop off, multiple elevations and the creek challenging players at the front nine practice basket, a second practice basket before hole 10, hole 11 along Lake Michigan's sand dunes, manicured fairways, challenging wooded holes, up hills, down hills, hump shots, and a future outhouse as an obstacle in the middle of hole 13. The park itself offers walking and biking trails, sand beaches on Lake Michigan, playground areas, picnic areas throughout the park, a large soccer field, great fishing in Silver Creek, and plenty of room to relax.

Extractions: Course Directory T he disc golf course at the Buffumville Damsite in Charlton, Massachusetts was designed and laid out in the fall of 1998 by Brian Longcore, a Student Conservation Association volunteer doing an internship for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The course was expanded to 27 holes in 2000, each with gravel or asphalt tees and a polehole basket (like the drawing above). In September 2001, during National Public Lands Day, tee pads for the first 18 holes were concreted.* Later that fall, the Bufumville Lake staff, along with volunteers from Oxford (Massachusetts) High School's Project Coffee, finished the remander of the tee. Now, the entire course has concrete or asphalt tee pads. (*Thanks primarily to the volunteer labors of Greg Crenshaw, Rich Gunther, Jason Ballard, Vincent Steele, and Javier Melendez, with assistance from John Alper, Dave Boneparth, Joel Brown, Felix Harvey, Zak Martin, Oden Shong, Jon Sterrit, Steven Tumicki, Dave Balkema, Ryan Brunelle, Rachel Beebe, Steve Ditter, Paul Grimes, Jeff Poltczyk, Mike Wood, Dave Johnson, Tim E. Walsh, Mike Mattioli, and Lee Rothstein.) There are two separate courses, the "A" course and the "B" course, utilizing alternate polehole placements.
