Extractions: Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu The Daito-ryu scrolls issued by Takeda Sokaku (beginning just before the turn of the century) include a lineage that traces the art back to the Emperor Seiwa, who, legend has it, won his throne when his sumo champion defeated his elder brother's champion. The actual founder of the art is said to have been Seiwa's descendant Shinra Saburo Minamoto no Yoshimitsu [1045-1127], who lived in a mansion known as Daito, hence the name Daito-ryu. The art was then handed down through his descendants, the Takeda family of Kai Province (modern-day Yamanashi Prefecture), until that family's destruction five years after the fall of the its most famous member, general Takeda Shingen, in 1573. A distant relative of Shingen's, Kunitsugu, made his way to Aizu in 1644, where he was taken on as a karo (senior councilor) under the Aizu lord Hoshina Masayuki [1611-1673], son of the second Tokugawa shogun, Hidetada. Daito-ryu tradition asserts that Kunitsugu taught his family's secret techniques to his lord Masayuki, who combined them with the principles of court etiquette that he had learned as

Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Soke The third son and successor of Sokaku Takeda, Tokimune Takeda began training in the martial arts under his father in 1925. He completed the Hokkaido Police Officer Training Course in 1946, and in 1947, a police course in stick handling techniques. While a member of the police force, Tokimune received several awards for outstanding service in arresting criminals. He joined the Yamada Fishery Co., Ltd., in December 1951 and worked there until his retirement in 1976. Tokimune established the Daitokan dojo in Abashiri, Hokkaido in 1953, and organized the Daito-ryu techniques, incorporating into them elements of Ono-ha Itto-ryu to create his own Daito-ryu aikibudo. He received the Cultural Social Education Award from Abashiri City on November 3, 1987. The following text is a compilation of several interviews conducted with Tokimune Takeda between 1985 and 1987 in Abashiri, Hokkaido and Tokyo. Now that the role of Daito-ryu in the development of aikido is better understood I think it likely that more aikido people will become interested in the history of the art. I would like to begin by asking you some questions about your father, Sokaku Takeda. Can it be said that he created the art of Daito-ryu?

Classes consist of traditional Iaido from the Daito Mushin Ryu, Tameshigeri (cutting practice) and related weapons training with wooden weapons that include bokken (wooden sword), wakisashi (short sword), tanto (dagger), nito-ryu (two swords), jo (short staff), and all variations against one another. All steel blades used in Iaido are shinken (true, hand-forged Japanese swords). Replica or homemade swords are not permitted. Modern hand-forged blades must be approved by Sensei. The History of Daito Mushin Ryu G raziano Sensei trained in Fusashima, Japan in the early 1960's under Takashi Kazumi Sensei in the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu. This style traces back to the Tokugawa shogunate (early 1600's) when the Yagyu family served as sword instructors to the Shogun and his family. When Graziano Sensei lived in Michigan, he studied the Muso Shinden Ryu (another very old style) under Masaki Shibata Sensei. Later, Graziano Sensei studied under Sadeo Kotaka Sensei in Ohio. Graziano Sensei found important elements in each of these styles. When he decided to pass on his knowledge of the sword to his students in Florida, he chose to include techniques from all of these styles. Because the merged style was not true to any one style, it would have been disrespectful to have used his Sensei's style names for this new style. He chose to give it a new name, the Daito Mushin Ryu (the
TAKUMAKAI daitoryu Aiki Jujutsu is one of the Ko Budo. A.Outline of daito-ryu history Japan was unified for the first time in the 3rd or 4th century. http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~DE6S-UMI/tkm04.htm
Extractions: Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu is one of the Ko Budo. The detail of its development in the Edo period(1603 ` 1868) and before is not clear. There are no books or no records about Daito-ryu. Perhaps there were some manuscripts written, but they were lost in the 1868 war. Or perhaps the practitioners purposely kept their techniques secret by not writing anything down. The truth is not known. Japan was unified for the first time in the 3rd or 4th century. This was probably an association of tribes, ruled by one emperar. In 645, Nakano-ooeno-ouji, the son of the current emperor, revolted, and killed the family of the king of the biggest tribe. With his succession to power, Japan came under one rule. Up till 1192, Asuka period , Nara period, and Heian period was controlled by emperors. In the beginning, the emperors were very strong, but year by year the aristocracy took more and more control and the emperors came under their control. At the same time, it was becoming more and more difficult to maintain public peace. People began to take actions for their own personal self-defense. In the 9th or 10th century, professional groups of self-defense began to appear. These groups were known as Samurai. As time moved on, the Samurai gained more and more power. There were two main Samurai families, the Heishi, and the Genji. According to oral tradition, in 11th century, the top leader of the Genji clan was Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, and one of his sons, Minamoto no Yoshiie. In particular, they became very powerful in the east part of Japan after Zen Ku Nen no Eki War(1051-1062), and Go San Nen no Eki War(1083-1087).

Extractions: This is a fascinating and authoritative look at Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. It has many B/W photos, and at the end of the book, it also shows a representative sampling of Daito-ryu techniques. I especially enjoyed reading this book because it helps lay to rest some of the myths surrounding one of the earliest Judoka, Shiro Saigo. If I were training in Aikido or Daito-ryu, this book would easily rate 5 stars. Definitely take a look at this one, if you can.
