Extractions: Member posted 06-25-2003 12:40 PM Okay, this could take a while. I'll do my best, but others may want to correct me. Daito ryu is a form of aiki jutsu (or aiki ju jutsu if you prefer) that was re-established in the 19th century by a Japanese man called Sokaku Takeda, who was the legitimate heir to the headmastership of the school. The actual origins of aiki jutsu are somewhat obscure, but it is generally accepted as being a very traditional form of ju jutsu that dates back many centuries. The most common explanation of it is that it was thought to be a superior style of ju jutsu, and taught only to a select group of important samurai. The "secrets" of aiki were jealously guarded and it wasn't until Takeda sensei, and after him Ueshiba sensei, brought them out of obscurity that the style became popular. There are various schools of aiki jutsu, of which daito ryu is the most well known.

Extractions: "Daito-Ryu" About Okamoto Sensei Seigo Okamoto was born in Hokkaido, Japan in 1925. He served as a young man in the Japanese navy as a airplane mechanic/tech. Later at the urging of a friend he visited the dojo of master Kodo Horikawa, who was a top student of the renowned Daito-ryu master, Sokaku Takeda. Mr. Okamoto was at that time already 38 years old, and had never even heard of Daito-ryu before. At first he thought the "fights" were fake, and he couldn't believe that Horikawa sensei (4' 11", and 69 years old) was actually throwing 4-5 attackers at once. But Mr. Okamoto thought it might be good exercise, and he really enjoyed socializing with the dojo members, so he continued to practice and never missed a class. The training in those days was very intense. After about five or six years Horikawa sensei asked Mr. Okamoto to teach the beginners. One by one the other senior students stopped training, and soon Mr. Okamoto became the most senior student, and began teaching the general classes under the guidance of Horikawa sensei. In 1974 Okamoto sensei was promoted to seventh dan, and in 1977 he moved to Tokyo. One of his co-workers suggested that he open a dojo and teach. With Horikawa sensei's blessing he opened the Tokyo branch of the Kodokai. The following year (1978) Okamoto sensei received the master's teaching license from Horikawa sensei.

Extractions: Updated February 24 th Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu is one of the oldest recorded forms of Japanese Aikijujutsu. The origin of the art is somewhat under a dispute since a Korean legend claims that Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu was developed by Prince Sadazumi (884-916) (known as Prince Teijun in Korea), the sixth son of Japanese Emperor Seiwa, after receiving instruction in Yoo Sool from traveling Korean Buddhist monks. The documentation of Aikijujutsu, however, attributes the style's development to Minamoto no Yoshimitsu (1045-1127), the third son of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi (988-1075), who was the fifth-generation descendant of Emperor Seiwa. Nonetheless, Minamoto no Yoshimitsu is regarded as the founder on Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. The Minamoto family was one of the major ruling clans of Japan during the Heian Period (794-1158) and onward in Japanese history. In fact, Minamoto no Yorimoto (1147-1199) established the Kamakura Shogunate, a period when the samurai military governed the country. Yoshikiyo (1094-1145), the eldest son of Minamoto no Yoshimitsu moved away from the central clan to an area known as Kai. There he started a new lineage of the Minamoto clan that became known as based on the Chinese reading of the Takeda family, who developed Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu in the years that followed.
