Way To Make A Buck (washingtonpost.com) Way to Make a Buck bull riding Extremely Profitable By Lee Hockstader Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, April 7, 2004; Page A01. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A56031-2004Apr6.html
Extractions: Wednesday, April 7, 2004; Page A01 HOUSTON Men who ride 1,800-pound bucking bulls for a living do not as a rule say "yee-ha," although they tend to speak with cowboy drawls thick as braided rope. They keep fit with hundreds of push-ups and sit-ups a day, developing granite physiques and extra allure for rodeo groupies, known as "buckle bunnies." At just about any rodeo, the bull riders are relatively easy to spot: They're the ones whose faces are creased and splotched by scars; they're the ones who limp. Bull riding is so dangerous, and the bulls are bred for such reliable ferocity, that the pros wear flak jackets, mouth guards and, increasingly, helmets. Nonetheless, a bull rider is injured every 13 or so rides stomped by hooves, head-butted in midair, dragged by his own rope, bludgeoned by horns the dimensions of warped baseball bats and every year or so someone is killed. Increasingly, and largely because of the sport's dependable violence, Americans beyond the traditional country rodeo audience are embracing bull riding. Capitalizing on its notoriety as the most dangerous eight seconds in sports, the event has hit the big time, attracting television deals, huge crowds, serious money and major corporate sponsors.
Go Bull Riding (washingtonpost.com) Go bull riding Sunday, May 2, 2004; Page M06. I learned bull riding the hard way, says Chip Ridgely, 38, owner of Rockin R Arena in Union Bridge, Md. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54861-2004Apr29.html
Extractions: Sunday, May 2, 2004; Page M06 It's been called "the most dangerous eight seconds in sports" the terrifying, pulse-pounding stretch of time that a cowboy tries to spend atop a bucking one-ton bull. The moments after he gets thrown off, when he scrambles to avoid angry hooves, aren't exactly calm, either. And yet, you don't have to be a rodeo champ to taste this elemental battle between man and (irritated) beast. At three bull-riding clinics on the outskirts of the metro area, knowledgeable instructors teach thrill seekers the tricks to riding 'em, cowboy. Students don't have to be in shape (though it helps) or have rodeo experience to participate. But you do need a steely grip, an acceptance of pain and, most important, absolutely no tendency to whine. "I learned [bull riding] the hard way," says Chip Ridgely, 38, owner of Rockin' R Arena in Union Bridge, Md. "So I don't baby my students. You're going to cowboy up or you're going to leave." What to Expect: Novice riders can be a varied lot. Sonny Williams, 32, co-owner of J Bar W Ranch in Union Bridge, says his students have ranged from ages 8 to 30. Most are male, but women also participate. Classes are small typically fewer than 10 people. Usually, the instructors begin by showing students how to gear up with proper equipment rope, spurs, chaps, gloves, a protective vest and a mouthpiece and how to position their hands, feet and rope. Then there's the getting-on-the-bull part.

Bull Riding - Cody Nite Rodeo bull riding bull riding is the most dangerous and the most exciting of the rodeo events. These bulls are very fast, powerful and can weigh as much as a ton. http://www.comp-unltd.com/~rodeo/bullride.html
Extractions: Bull Riding Bull riding is the most dangerous and the most exciting of the rodeo events. These bulls are very fast, powerful and can weigh as much as a ton. Consequently, bull riding is saved until the last and no one leaves until the final bull has been ridden. It also draws a lot of participants because the cowboy usually gets a tough, mean-spirited bucking bull - there are no duds - and, therefore, more money can be made. Not only does the bull rider have to stay on the twisting bull for 8 seconds but he has to escape on foot once he gets off. He does have some help reaching safety from the clowns whose job it is to distract the bull and to free the cowboy if he gets hung up in his bull rope . Many a cowboy has been saved from serious injury by the clowns. Horses and pickup men can't be used because cross-blood Brahma bulls will attack the horses. The cowboy hangs on to a loose rope tied around the bull's middle with one hand. He may use a duffletype handle or not, but his free hand can not touch the bull, himself, or the equipment at anytime. Disqualification results if he touches anything or if he gets bucked off. There must be a bell attached to the

Bull Riding-Related Brain And Spinal Cord Injuries -- LA, 94-95 bull ridingRelated Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries Louisiana, 1994-1995. Bull-riding schools for experienced riders exist but are not widely used. http://wonder.cdc.gov/wonder/prevguid/m0043745/m0043745.asp
Extractions: POINT OF CONTACT FOR THIS DOCUMENT: Rodeos are popular sporting events in the southern and western United States, and bull riders sustain 37% of all rodeo-related injuries more than participants in any other rodeo event (1,2). During 1994-1995 in Louisiana, five cases of central nervous system trauma associated with riding bulls in rodeo events were identified through the Louisiana Central Nervous System Injury Registry, a statewide, population-based surveillance system addressing brain and spinal cord injury incidence, etiology, and outcome. To further characterize these injury events, the Office of Public Health, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, conducted chart reviews and follow-up telephone interviews with the five injured persons or their parents and interviewed rodeo organizations about rules, regulations, and membership. This report summarizes the investigations of these five cases and recommends use of protective equipment to reduce the risk for such injuries.
