Extractions: Mt Thebarton Ice Arena . March 1988 was the year that we sent the first Australian team overseas, to Canada, for 21 matches in 27 days, 7 players from Adelaide attended. Later that year we expanded to 6 teams, with the addition of the Vipers and the Hackers. In 1991 we sent a team to the 1st World Broomball Championships in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, some 15 players from Adelaide represented Australia. 1995 saw 2 members from Adelaide attend the Broomball Mania VIII, held in the USA. Followed up by a further three representitives (and only Australians) to the 2nd World broomball Tournament in in Victoria, British Columbia in 1996. Adelaide was the host of the 1998 Australian Broomball Championships which will be held in from June 5th - 8th. This event was unfortunately won by the ACT in both the Men's and Coed divisions. The 1998 World Broomball Tournament (III) held in Bolzano Italy, was attended by 3 more members from Adelaide (again the only Australians) joining a Coed team with members from many other parts of the world.

Extractions: International Broomball Wizards Home The Players Game Results Team Stats ... The Wizards Back Pages (the National Enquirer of broomball web sites) Birth of Broomball in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (Down Under) One day (about 1992) one of mates asked me if I wanted to join him for a game of broomball... The standard "what the hell" ensued but the interest was there. Damn a game where you run on ice.. how could I refuse. I went down and played for my mates team the Twisters.. scoreing three goals on debut I was hooked. I quickly gathered my other friends to form our own team.. Hackers !! Our Hackers team did well winning a couple of seasons. When we first started no one had broomball shoes. The sticks were rake handles with a triangle of rubber nailed on. As we discovered broomball throughout Australia we purchased the correct gear and raised our standards joining the Australian National Tournaments in 1995. I had played Broomball in Townsville (pop 85,000 way up North) for a number of years but had finished university and was looking to move to Sydney (pop 3.5 million) for work. The only problem was that broomball was not officially played in Sydney. The Australian Nationals had been run in June 1996 at the Narrabeen ice rink on Sydney's northern beaches and I contacted the organiser and managed to razzle up some numbers for Sunday afternoon games. We were just getting going with consistent numbers when the Ice Rink Chillers died. The owners decided to tear it down and make it a car park. We decided that instead of giving up we would try various other Ice Rinks. Blacktown our last choice seemed to be our best option. For $150 he would gives us 2 hours on a Wednesday night from 9-11pm. We made up signs and put them around the rink to draw numbers. We did well; from 4-5 players to 15... but we didn't really go anywhere from there. We entered the '97 nationals with 1 or 2 NSW natives and about 5-6 Townsville relocatees.

Extractions: The History of Toledo Area Broomball The Toledo area Young Life ministry started a broomball program as part of their youth outreach in the Toledo Area. Young Life , under the guidance of then Area Director Harry George, had been active in the Toledo area for a number of years and it wanted to have a new vehicle for contact work with area high school youth. Since they already had a number of activities that facilited outreach work with area boys, it was decided to come up with a new outreach that would serve as an activity for area girls. The first broomball tournament was one weekend long. Each Toledo area Young Life Club had its own broomball team, with its Young Life leaders serving as the coaches. To maximize the youth participation, each team played with 10 players on the ice. Since it was never intended that the broomball program be an athletic league, but rather a fun and competitive activity, two games were played at the same time, on half ice, and they only lasted for two, eight minute periods. That way a larger number of games could be played, at a quickened pace, with more participants on hand to watch. The tournament was concluded with the two teams, with the best records from each conference, playing for the championship.
