Bordering on the unreal. It's just got to be what the sandman sprinkles at dreamtime. Every particle that clings to your sun-drenched body is a speckle of white coral and shell worn down by the powerful ocean currents, and the annual typhoon waves. It takes patience to make a beach: each bit of organic building material must be rubbed, tossed and dragged about repeatedly by water movement till it breaks down into fine and still much finer sand. The beach is a living earthscape. With every wave, sand is deposited and removed everyday. Boracay's white beach is a delicate tribute to ecological balance. Whiteness is retained by keeping offshore coral communities healthy. It is also white because there is neither quartz, feldspar, nor magnetite to color Boracay sand otherwise. The island paradise was born in pre-history when a reef platform attached to northwestern Panay Island rose and revealed two islets. Sand accumulated between the twain, wedding them into a Philippine contribution to the world's natural treasures. From Manila to Caticlan, it took less than an hour on board the Seair. The entourage is composed of Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon, Louie Pawid of DoT, two journalists from Lakbay TV and this writer.

We settled on Windjammer because of the informality. We liked the idea of never having to dress up, the small number of passengers, and of getting to see some of the smaller islands in the Caribbean. The first barefoot competition was at Cypress Gardens in 1950 when Emilio Zamudio persuaded the judges to hold a separate competition for barefooting because the rules of trick competition required the use of skiis. At the National Tournament in 1956 Mike Osborne convinced the director to allow him to put on one of the first major barefoot exhibitions. Later in that tournament a pair of double skiers stepped out of their skis to perform the first double barefoot routine. Many skiers contributed to innovations in the following years: Joe Cash invented a deep water start (now replaced) Don Tompson invented the tumble turn Randy Rabe first successful backwards barefooter Don Tompson performs back to front and front to back surface turns First Australian National Championships By 1970 the Australians began to upstage the Americans somewhat with Garry Barton introducing several new tricks including the back-to-front stepover and developing a new toe-hold handle so that reverse tricks could be performed. In 1973 an international competition was held at Cypress Gardens and the Australians swept every event. In 1978, 54 skiers from 10 countries competed in the first World Championships on the Molongo River in Canberra, Australia. Australia continued to dominate world competition until the retirement of Brett Wing and the clenching of the mens overall title by Mike Seiple (US) in 1984.
