Someone once posted: Years ago (in the 60's and 70's) skateboarding was a sport that MANY young people enjoyed doing barefoot. Now, you NEVER see a skateboarder barefoot! NEVER! In fact, if you visit the skateboarding sites, and look up the history of skateboarding, they do not even acknowledge that the early skateboarders preferred to do it barefoot. (There were many neat tricks that required you to be barefoot.) Time for a little barefooting archaeology. Yes, kids definitely used to skateboard barefoot. I think two things enabled that. First, kids went barefoot in general a lot more. Second, the boards in use at that time were often the "banana" type boards. I've tried my son's skateboard and the first thing I noticed was that the edges were too sharp to comfortably curl my toes around. They aren't really designed to be foot-friendly, but I suppose one could adapt. I also tried an old style "banana" board. It's much thicker with nicely curved and smooth edges. It felt very natural in bare feet. I saw an (older) skateboarding book once, that included a short section on barefoot tricks. This included a diagram of something called the "gorilla grip" where the toes are wrapped under the board for jumps made while holding onto the board with one's feet. I had heard about this 18 minute film short (

Extractions: NO Skis are Needed Here Barefooters are a rare breed. The excitement of this sport offers something to both the recreational and competitive barefooter after the mastered " Water-skiing's Ultimate Challenge. " When it comes to equipment, they have special needs. Only certain equipment will hold up to the demands of these nimble athletes who dance upon the water speed over 40 miles per hour. Flexibility, warmth, and durability are just a starting point. It is the very beginning of the Water-skiing season for the most committed barefooter in the United States. Oddly enough most of the premier barefooters tend to come from the northern United States. Just go the the top of the 2000 Pam Am Standings list and then dig in and find out were the top 5 skiers are from! That right 4 out of 5 of these skiers started in Upper Midwest and New Hampshire. All of them spent many years in a drysuit. It is a well established fact that the smartest money a water-skier can do is own a drysuit. Living in a northern tier state it allowed the most talented barefooters in world perfect their skills. The warmth of a drysuit doubles the value of a boat for 5 key reasons:

Splayed toes are a well-documented characteristic of "primitive" indigenous people, and camels - well, thanks to growing up largely without shoes on my feet, I've got 'em too! These days I jog barefoot, I drive barefoot, and I go shopping barefoot. But contrary to popular opinion, I am not crazy , I did not forget my shoes, and I am not breaking any laws. People react to me jogging without shoes as if I'm participating in some kind of bizarre extreme sport. I'm not. Humans have been doing it for millenia (albeit without shards of glass littering the ground). Running barefoot certainly requires conditioning, but it is not a superhuman feat. What's more, many relevant professionals (i.e. the physios, podiatrists, and physiologists who aren't sponsored by the sports-shoe industry) agree that running barefoot is beneficial for feet, ankles, shins, and especially knees. Don't take my word for it, though. Go ahead and try a search for "barefoot running" on Google. But before you abandon your shoes, be warned going barefoot as a rule requires thick skin (and I'm not talking about the soles of one's feet any more). My bare feet have seen me shut out of places ranging from the local cinema to the national war memorial.

Extractions: BAREFOOT WATER SKIING History and Description Although barefoot slalom, tricks and jumping water ski events are very similar to traditional events, the major difference here is, you guessed it, participants do not wear skis. In the slalom event, an athlete earns points for crossing the boat wakes in a course that does not have buoys. In tricks, an athlete attempts to perform as many tricks as he can during two 15-second passes. Each trick has a pre-assigned point value and an athlete may perform each trick only once. The athlete who earns the most points wins the event. In the jumping event, the ramp height is only 18 inches (45.5 centimeters), but the boat speed is more than 40 miles per hour, which is feet-burning fast! Faster boat speeds are required for an athlete to plane on his two bare feet. There are no hand tools needed to make barefoot equipment repairs, only a tube of super glue. If a blister or cut opens on the bottom of an athlete's foot, standard procedure is to glue it shut now to finish skiing and deal with the stitches later. In addition to slalom, tricks and jumping, barefoot athletes also participate in figure eight competitions and endurance events where the athlete who stays up the longest is the winner.
