Extractions: It was the middle of July and I has set my start date for August 30, 1999 to begin teaching Spirit Moves Classes. I had exactly 6 weeks to work out a a routine, lose some weight, gain some self-confidence, and keep on praying! The day came for the first class, and three people showed up. We did have a workout, but let's just say that God knew I definitely needed some help! So to the next class he sent a messenger, Victoria Johnson! Victoria is a woman of incredible faith, as well as an internationally known fitness expert. Victoria gave me the confidence to continue, despite my inhibitions. God carried me through the panic of wanting to quite and used Victoria as His messenger to show me that I was the one He had chosen to lead this class. Now, one year and 45 pounds later, over 30 women have participated in Spirit Moves! I have met some boundless women that have come to restore the temples that God created for them! We are strong and not just physically! We are full of God's message to us... We are beautifully created in His image. Major studies in the 1980s have indicated that American children are lacking in cardiovascular fitness, accounting for a host of degenerative health difficulties and various psychological disorders. However, research has also indicated that children participating in aerobic exercises can avoid many health problems. Only 41% of the children who even participate in physical education exert themselves during exercise sufficiently enough to enhance cardiorespiratory functioning. This lack of physical activity has resulted in American children becoming more obese since the 1960s. It has been suggested that this increase in body fat is responsible for reduced cardiovascular capacity which in turn limits a child's ability to resist coronary heart disease. In addition, a lack of physical activity accounts for a host of diseases including hypertension, diabetes, impaired tolerance for heat, and various psychological disorders.

Extractions: MORE AEROBIC THAN "AEROBICS" The most common question asked by our new personal training clients at Ideal Exercise is: "Where are the treadmills and stationary bicycles?". Most have never heard that great benefits to the cardiovascular system, commonly referred to as "aerobic fitness", can be had through a program of high-intensity strength training with no additional steady-state activity. And while I do certainly spend a great deal of my time explaining why such benefits are certainly possible (and more desirable as it is much more efficient to achieve muscular and cardiovascular benefits in a single program) it usually takes a few workouts before the client understands the depth and magnitude of cardiovascular involvement possible from strength training. As one of my trainees remarked recently (after a set of squats to complete failure followed by 20 seconds of effort against the bar in the bottom position): "My God! (gasp, gasp...) this is more aerobic than aerobics..." Although (as I shall explain) the statement that high-intensity strength training is "more aerobic than aerobics" is not entirely correct, such an observation on the trainee's part does underscore the profound effect of intense muscular contractions on the cardiovascular system. The current mania for "aerobics" in the fitness industry stems from a misunderstanding of two factors: The function of the cardiovascular system, and the identification of skeletal muscle as the window through which optimum loading of the entire metabolic system(s) including the cardiovascular systemtakes place.
