Rapid social changes, such as the shift from the household economy and the intensification of industrialization and urbanization, facilitated a shift in dominant sexual ideologies away from a family-centered, reproduction-oriented sexuality. This new era, described by historians as "sexual liberalism," marked the emergence of patterns familiar to us today—the growing separation of sex and reproduction; the expansion of commercialized sexuality; and the affirmation of sex as central, not just for a solid marriage but for personal fulfillment. The medical profession, most specifically the field of sexology, played a crucial role in both supporting and helping to effect some of these changing dynamics. "Sexology" is loosely defined as the scientific study of sex. It is an umbrella term denoting the activity of a multidisciplinary group of researchers, clinicians, and educators concerned with sexuality. Over the last century, sexologists have endeavored to establish themselves as a viable profession with cultural authority over issues of sexuality and gender. Sexual scientists are concerned with sexual functioning, sexual variation, and gender development and dysfunction. They have invented interpretive systems, categories, and languages to describe sexual experience. Sexology has played a complex role in identifying, challenging, and perpetuating cultural imperatives about sex and gender.

    Extractions: Here is a photo of my Campus Sexual Rights Forum table on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley in 1966. The girl in the photo is Joyce Kaskey, whom I paid $1.25 per hour to sit at this table, sell buttons and discuss issues of sexual freedom with passers-by. The sign in the photo says "Campus Sexual Rights Forum", which was the name of my registered on-campus student organization with Sam Sloan as the President. The sign is in my handwriting. The caption to the photo reads: "Above photo is a scene on the Berkeley Campus in California, 1966, where a student group campaigns for liberalized sex laws." The authorities in Sproul Hall would not allow us to use the name "Sexual Freedom League", as it conjured up images of wild sex orgies, but they would allow us to call ourselves the Campus Sexual Rights Forum, a group dedicated to discussing intellectual matters pertaining to sexual rights. Of course, while we were discussing these weighty matters pertaining to individual rights and liberties, we could do other things as well, such as engaging in sex orgies.

Open a newspaper and you're sure to see a story about the promising effects of Viagra on women. Open the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy and find an editorial announcing a "Pharmacological era in the treatment of sexual disorders" (Segraves, 1998). The search for aphrodisiacs to stimulate sexuality and potions to resist sexual decline is age-old, but it entered a new chapter at the end of the twentieth century with official federal Food and Drug Administration approval of sex-enhancing drugs. Sex researchers are playing a growing role in the development and distribution of the new sex drugs. Is sexology on its way to becoming a subsidiary of the pharmaceutical industry? I hope not, but the recent history of psychiatry shows how an entire field can be taken over by pro-pharmaceutical thinking and practice, and this example should make us very worried (Healy, 1998).
