Perhaps no area reviewed in this section has been the subject of less scientific research than this topic of childhood sexuality. To some extent, the paucity of research has been due to general social concerns about the ethical implications of studying children or assumptions about the possible harm to children that would result if they were to be included in sexuality research. Researchers have frequently had difficulty gaining the permission of legal guardians to ask children questions about their knowledge of sexuality. In this atmosphere, it would be exceedingly difficult to get permission to ask children about their sexual behavior. One consequence of this general social concern has been that most of the relevant research has been confined to asking adults or college students to report retrospectively about events that occurred in their childhood. There are rather clear and obvious limitations to this approach. While the word 'sexology' might appear to be part of today's trendy vocabulary, both the word and the concept, have a long history. The scientific study of sex and sexuality can be traced back at least to the classical Greek period in the Western world, and even earlier in the Eastern world. Throughout history, emphasis in sexological study has tended to focus on the outcomes of sex, rather than the experience of sexuality. Specific focal areas for the study of sexology have primarily prioritised human reproduction and sexual health as topics for learning and research. The study of love, sexual emotions, human relationships, human sexual response, criminal sexual behaviour, sexual function and sexual fulfilment have been relatively recent endeavours in the scientific study of sexuality. Students in the sexology program at Curtin University study the range of human sexuality, from legal to illegal, childhood to adulthood, and relationships to reproduction; including biases, beliefs and behaviours, fetishes, function and fulfilment, desire, difference and disease, erotica, emotion and experience.

    Extractions: the foreskin of the uncircumcised penis. Is Smegma useful? Yes, certainly. It lubricates the cavity between the foreskin of the penis and the glans, thus allowing smooth movement between them during intercourse. During an erection, the glans increases in size. The foreskin, on the other hand does not change its dimensions. It is yielding enough and thin enough to accept the enlarged glans. Furthermore, the foreskin is pressed backward during intercourse, and on subsidence of erection returns to its normal position. These movements are not entirely passive but are aided by the relaxation of the muscle fibers within the foreskin. To secure its even distribution, smegma is formed from the whole inner surface of the foreskin cavity. Recently, Soviet researchers at the Botkin's Hospital in Moscow have discovered important details of this process. Smegma production, they find, is concentrated in the cells of innumerable small prominences, minute microscopic protrusions of various shapes and sizes found on the inner surface of the foreskin cavity.
