Extractions: Conflict is an inescapable part of the human experience. While conflict is often viewed as being undesirable, it is not necessarily "bad" nor the result of unreasonable or evil intentions. Conflict need not lead to violence and can actually serve the positive function of enabling society to develop creative solutions to current social problems. Conflict and the competition that arises from it, if managed properly, can actually serve as the "glue" that holds together a peaceable society. The purpose of the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) program is to explore why conflict and violence occurs, to understand how conflict can be managed, utilized, and transformed by "collaborative decision-making" to accomplish constructive ends, and to facilitate real-life, hands-on, "in the field" learning of peace and conflict issues through Internship placements with a wide variety of peace, justice, and development agencies. A theoretical understanding of peace and conflict, as well as training in the practical skills necessary to practice the techniques, are explored. What is Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS)?
Educating For Peace Network of Ottawa teachers and students. Site provides resources for studies and peace advocacy within the curriculum. http://www.global-ed.org/e4p/
Extractions: Educating for Peace works with the school system to build a peaceful, just and sustainable world for our children. We know that peace education helps students to transform conflict in their own lives, understand and respect other cultures and ways of living, and treasure the Earth. Teachers of peace education encourage their students to cooperate with each other, think critically, solve problems constructively, take part in responsible decision-making, communicate clearly, share their feelings and commitments openly. These skills and values are essential for survival in an increasingly interdependent world, where violence has become an instrument of policy, yet still breeds more violence.
