Extractions: ASD Trustee The Ancient art of dowsing has been practiced throughout millennia, although the names used to identify it may have changed in different cultures and eras, the techniques have not. During several research journeys to Egypt and the Middle East, I have photographed etchings on 4000 year old temple walls of pharaohs holding devices in their hands resembling dowsing tools. Cairo Museum is holding ceramic pendulums which have been removed from thousand-year old tombs. In China, there is an etching of Chinese Emperor Yu who ruled China 2500 years ago, and in his hands he holds a rather bulky turn-pronged device that resembles a dowsing device.

Extractions: Father's Day is a new holiday. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. It was proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd (Mrs. John B. Dodd) of Washington State in 1909 after attending a Mother's Day service. Mrs. Dodd wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran, who raised six children after his wife died in childbirth. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, but it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed the proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June Father's Day officially in the United States. Even then, the first Presidential Proclamation in 1966 was only for one year. It wasn't until April 24, 1972 that Father's Day was assured annual recognition by Presidential Proclamation.

Extractions: Devon was the cornerstone of one of Britain's most significant Celtic Kingdoms (Dumnonia), and retains a significant heritage from those days. Devon's people are predominantly of Celtic stock, with the Celtic language (which also resulted in Cornish) being spoken well into the dark ages, and is retained today in place names, dialect, as well as in customs and culture. This is not to say that the Saxons, who 'conquered' Devon in the eight and ninth centuries (and who militarily conquered Cornwall in the ninth and tenth centuries), or the Normans who did the same to the whole of England in the eleventh century, are without merit or contribution. However the point of this web-page is to promote that part of Devon's history which for some strange reason appears to have been repressed - that of Celtic Devon

While most history books credit the expansion of the Soviet Union into Poland and Czechoslovakia in the postwar 1940s as the rationale for this defensive group, its precursor was actually initiated by Roosevelt in an effort to curb - yes, you guessed it - the French. Given the traitorous nature of the frogs during Nazi occupation, Roosevelt opted to join forces with Stalin to keep the cheese-eating nation under a collective, international thumb. This went along grandly until Roosevelt had the temerity to die. Once Truman stepped aboard, all bets were off, and before you know it, we had an Iron Curtain on our hands. Read the article Not as much as we'd like Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris Derided as an American Imperialist, praised as an environmental visionary, and confused with his famous (far-removed) cousin, Theodore Roosevelt is an under-reported President in the 21st century. Edmund Morris has taken colorful details and excellent narrative style and told the best version of the important story of Teddy Roosevelt's presidential years. (To be fair, it's hard to go too far wrong with a president whose favorite phrase was 'Bully!' and who would regularly force White House visitors to go hiking, climbing and skinny dipping at all hours of the day and night just for the thrill of it.) Teddy's presidency has many lessons for the insipid or clueless leaders of today. Inspire people with a positive vision. Act with honor. Engage the world. Love life itself. Don't put up with BS from your political party. While it may depress you to compare TR with America's 21st century leaders, it's still worth picking up a copy of this book.

Extractions: more ads Sikhism Potpourri Introduction The history and suffering of Sikhs is one of the most important episodes in the history of India. Guru Nanak Dev founded Sikhism in the fifteen century and he was followed by nine Gurus (divine teachers or prophets). Guru Angad developed the Gurumukhi script. Guru Ram Das laid the foundation for the city of Amritsar. Guru Arjun Dev compiled the Adi Grinth, the sacred text of Sikhs. But it was Guru Gobind Singh who gave Sikhism a renewed vigor and mass following in the seventeenth century. The principle of Sikhism was that there was but one God, and all men who were servants of God and Guru, and were bound together in a holy brotherhood known as the Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh also built the institution of Akalis. The Akalis were fiercely religious devotees soldiers of God. Late in the twentieth century (1970s and 1980s), the Akalis were to wage a bloody fight against the Indian Government that led to massive armed offensive against them. Today, people of Sikh religion can be found all over the world, due to years of persecution in their homeland (in 1738 by Nadir Shah, in 1748 to 1751 by Ahmed Shah Abdadi, by British in 1849, and in 1984 by Government militia) as well as due to their entrepreneur spirit. The Sikhs (or Sardarjis as they are popularly known) have been great patrons of art, religion and scholarship. Along with Rajputs, they are the known as the bravest people in India, and their women, among India's most beautiful. The Sikhs have participated in India's nation building for hundreds of years, fighting the British, serving in the military (the Sikh regiment is the most decorated regiment of the Indian army) and excelling in sports, and one even served as the President of India (Gianni Zail Singh). The Sikhs are a light-hearted, humorous (and hence targets of Sardarji jokes?), and religious people who love music and dance.
