This region becomes known as Magnesia. 600 BC - Thales of Miletos rubs amber ( elektron in Greek) with cat fur and picks up bits of feathers. 1269 - Petrus Peregrinus of Picardy, Italy, discovers that natural spherical magnets (lodestones) align needles with lines of longitude pointing between two pole positions on the stone. 1600 - William Gilbert, court physician to Queen Elizabeth, discovers that the earth is a giant magnet just like one of the stones of Peregrinus, explaining how compasses work. He also discusses static electricity and invents an electric fluid which is liberated by rubbing. ca. 1620 - Niccolo Cabeo discovers that electricity can be repulsive as well as attractive.

     Extractions: Ashmolean Museum John Tradescant the Elder (c.1570 - 1638) The John Tradescants Both the Tradescants became famous in their own time. They were gardeners to royalty, collectors of curiosities, travellers and importers of exotic plants. The John Tradescants are buried in the church yard of St-Mary-at-Lambeth which is now the Museum of Garden History, along with the grandson of the same name, who died aged nineteen. The knot garden at the museum is in the style of the Tradescants' time. To be 'curious' was a compliment in Elizabethan/Jacobean times and both Tradescants became famous for gardening, design, travel and their collection of curiosities. The epitaph on their tombstone describes very well why they became well known, and the interest there is today in their activities. This can be read today on their tomb at the museum. The Elder John Tradescant first travelled after 1609 when he entered the service of Robert Cecil who became the first Earl of Salisbury. He visited Europe to bring back plants and trees including roses, fritillaries and mulberries to the gardens at Hatfield. Later, in the service of Sir Edward Wotton, Tradescant accompanied a diplomatic mission to Russia, and he also visited Algiers, always taking botanical notes and gathering plants. By the 1620's Tradescant had achieved a prominent position as a director of gardens whose advice was sought by the highest in the land.

     Extractions: Powder Plotters arraigned, tried and convicted The eight principal conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot - a nefarious scheme to blow up the King, his family and Parliament that was providentially uncovered last November 5, just as the bomb was about to go off - were arraigned, tried and found guilty of high treason today. The trial began in the early morning hours after the eight plotters - Sir Everard Digby, Robert Winter, Thomas Winter, Ambrose Rookwood, John Grant, Robert Keyes, Thomas Bates and the infamous Guido Fawkes - were brought by boat from the Tower to the Court of Star Chamber in Westminster Hall. Once the Lords Commissioners - with the Lord Chief Justice Sir John Popham presiding - had taken their seats, the defendants were led in and set upon a scaffold in front of the Court. Prince Henry and Queen Anne are also known to have been listening to the proceedings from a secret place, as King James himself is also rumored to have done. To the charges - in brief, that the eight defendants, together with Catesby, Percy, the two Wrights, Tresham, and the three Jesuits Henry Garnet, Oswald Tesmond (alias Greenway) and John Gerrard (all killed in the pursuit), did traitorously conspire to kill the King and the Queen and Prince Henry; to raise sedition and to produce a miserable slaughter in the realm; to cause rebellion and to subvert and change the government and true worship of God established in the Realm; and also to invite foreigners to invade the Realm and make war against the King - all surprisingly pleaded not guilty, despite the extreme notoriety of their previous confessions. This prompted Chief Justice Popham to ask Guy Fawkes how he could deny the indictment, considering he was captured in the cellar with the powder, and never denied his guilt before, to which Fawkes responded that he disagreed merely with certain details of the indictment.

     Extractions: by Gail Lang People have been creating sculpture for as long as humans have been around. Its part of our everyday lives. Materials such as bronze, marble, wood, and clay are used to shape likenesses of objects, people or events. Over the centuries sculptures have changed the way their art looks while still maintaining some of the earliest techniques used. The Greek civilization, established before 800 BC, has left behind many wondrous sculptures helping us to learn of their times and lifestyles. Much of this Greek sculpture dealt with the naked body. Nakedness was not unusual for the Greeks. In their olympic games the athletes wore no clothing so that their performances were not restricted. Their statues were usually carved "in the round", meaning they were not attached to anything else but are free-standing and carved on all sides. Eventually the Greek statues changed and they began to depict people in more natural looking stances, later expressing deep emotion as well. Forms of sculptures were also used to tell stories. A Relief is a block of stone that was only cut on one side. "Trojan's Column" in Rome (114AD) is almost 100 feet tall with a continual spiral of reliefs telling a story beginning from the base and spiraling up around the column.

     Extractions: Glass History Glass is one of the most ancient of all materials known and used by mankind. The geologic glass, obsidian was first used by man thousands of years ago to form knives, arrow tips, jewelry etc. Manmade glass objects appear to be first reported in the Mesopotamian region as early as 4,500 BC. glass objects dating as old as 3,000 B.C. have also been found in Egypt. Surprisingly these glasses have compositions very similar to those of modern soda lime silicate glass. No doubt the readily available soda ash, from fires, limestone, from seashells and silica sand, from the beaches are the cause of this agreement. Earlier glass coated objects have been dated to as early as 12,000 B.C. and are in the form of glazes and enamels on ceramic pottery, used presumably to improve the water tightness of various jugs, bottles and vases.
