The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this unprecedented integration of capabilities. The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history. Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery. Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

Extractions: Shalom and welcome to a fascinating educational project, This project a very different way of getting acquainted with our roots is now, Baruch HaShem, into its tenth year of publication in Hebrew, its fifth in the computerised edition. An English version (different material) was inaugurated on the 26th of Nisan 5763 ( April 28th 2003 ). The Hebrew edition appears daily, Sunday through Thursday (a typical Israeli work-week), and the English, Monday to Friday, in deference to our overseas readers. In addition to individual readers, the Daily Page currently reaches a number of schools, prisons, IDF bases, as well as other Jewish and public facilities. Some of our readers post it on their bulletin boards at work or school. In this fashion, the Page is enjoyed by many more people than would otherwise be possible. On these pages, we review events that occurred to Jews throughout our history. We feel a grave responsibility to our readers to be accurate, and to nurture interest in our Jewish heritage: Am Yisrael Eretz Yisrael , and Torat Yisrael . We strive for unity of the Jewish people, while praising our many faces. We have tried to remain true to our beliefs, and yet open to hearing other voices. We have succeeded in relying solely on the Hebrew dates for events, hopefully making all of us more aware of the Jewish calendar. We use many different sources for gathering information, and occasionally we include articles designed to stimulate thought about matters of current interest.

Extractions: and itinerant printers This book tells the history of printing from the viewpoint of those wandering craftsmen and masters of the art of printing who spread the "art preservative of all arts" throughout the world, and who continued the tradition of mobility throughout the centuries, until abruptly, in the latter half of the 20th century, their skills were no longer needed. Printers were replaced by computers. From earliest days of America's history, the skills of those who worked with handset type, the printing press and the linotype were much in demand. For three centuries until computerized new processes signaled the end of the "hot type" era traveling printers were a tradition on newspapers and print shops around the United States and Canada. Most belonged to unions, often very strong and militant. Many printers worked in "country" printing plants where unions were unknown. But union or not, printers had a proclivity for travel. Their skills were not easily learned, but once acquired could be easily transferred from one newspaper or print shop to another. And travel they did. Some traveled from job to job, from town to town, so often they became known as "tramp" printers. The free and independent lifestyles they enjoyed were envied by other workers wherever tramp printers wandered. They were the epitome of Robert Service's poem "A Race of Men:"
