     Extractions: The Ethnology Collection contains over 10,000 objects made and used by Alaska Natives (Inupiaq and Yup'ik Eskimos, northwest coast and Athabascan Indians, and Aleuts) from the 1890's to the present. There are exceptional examples of basketry, beadwork, ivory carvings, masks, dolls, and gear used in subsistence activities. The History Collection has over 2,600 objects of Western manufacture including goods, folk art, tools, firearms, Russian-American material, aviation pioneer Carl Ben Eielson's airplane, and other memorabilia. The collections are available to researchers upon appointment and for loan to other institutions.

     Extractions: Founding of the Museum: The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded in 1888 and is the oldest among the modern cultural and scientific institutions of Western type in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A line of historical events influenced its establishment. A number of individuals and groups had for a long time prior to its founding emphasized the need for such an institution. The first idea of founding of the museum dates back to 1850. However, nearly four decades passed from the idea to its realization. Two empires ruled over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the meantime - the Ottoman rule gave way to the Austro-Hungarian one. Since the premises that originally hosted the Museum soon became too small and inconvenient, construction of a new building was initiated in 1908. It was decided that the new museum facilities would comprise of a complex of buildings housing all the existing collections in separate sections. The construction was completed in 1913 and the Museum was open for public on October 4th of the same year. It is in this museum complex that had for a long time been the only such specified-purpose museum building constructed on the territory of former Yugoslavia that the National Museum still works today.

A chronological survey is made of the settlements which existed from the end of the 2nd millennium BC to the end of the pre-Roman period. The brief historical-geographic characterization allows to consider the different types of settlements also in connection with the respective geographic environment, with the economic characteristics and in accordance with the stages of the ethnic and social development of the Thracians. The evidence from the excavations of different archaeological sites - settlements - reveals the principal features of the different types of settlements in various parts of ancient Thrace. Balkan peninsula: Neolithic villages Eneolithic villages Bronze age villages Tosho Spiridonov The dwelling is one of the main elements of the ethnographic characteristics of the Thracian ethnic community. Due to the almost complete lack of detailed evidence about the dwellings of the Thracians, their principal characteristic features have been derived on the basis of archaeological materials and the scanty data in the works of the ancient authors. The dwelling is studied in evolution, starting from the Neolithic Age, in order to trace the principal typological features. The dependence of the main features - agricultural, stockbreeding, ore-mining, military, etc. - of the economic character of the settlements is demonstrated along general lines. The changes in the construction, plan and purpose of its different part, both in functional terms and with respect to theorganization of the social space in the settlement, are demonstrated.

     Extractions: Rattlesnake Today, Huxley receives even less notice as an ethnologist than as a physical anthropologist. His contributions to ethnology begin with the observations he wrote in the journal and letters of the Rattlesnake voyage and with the many sketches he made of New Guinea people and of their artifacts and continued to 1890. Commentaries in his Rattlesnake diary provide material for appreciating his role as an observer and interpreter of cultures that seem to be far removed from the European, though he would devise generalizations covering both. Of the many examples in diary items, letters, and pictures, these are representative of his early ethnological interest and skill as reporter and as artistic recorder of natives and of their artifacts, canoes, huts and villages. While the primary emphasis is on First Nations and Metis peoples of the Northern Plains and Subarctic, the collections feature materials from other regions of North America, particularly the western Arctic and Great Lakes, as well as Africa, Australia, and Japan. Objects in the collections date from the mid-1800s to the present. The Ethnology collections are an invaluable resource for a wide variety of people interested in Alberta's history and cultural diversity. Individuals researching family and community history regularly consult the collections, as do university students conducting research projects in the fields of anthropology, history, Native studies, and clothing and textiles. The public school system incorporates Ethnology program materials into its curriculum, and Ethnology staff responds to numerous inquiries about First Nations and Metis cultures from members of the public and cultural heritage professionals. Staff members work in partnership with First Nations and Metis communities on cultural heritage projects, and the Ethnology program manages a summer internship program in Museology for Aboriginal university students.
