Extractions: Section 2 MEET REMARKABLE PEOPLE FROM THE US AND FORMER USSR. Russian students are more adventurous than most. You'll enjoy the company of people who are as curious and eager for discovery as you are. A lot of the fun of Russian study is in the unraveling of its many mysteries. You will express yourself in sounds, symbols, and concepts astonishingly different from those of English. Stretch yourself. Let our US-born staff guide you on a great linguistic adventure! Our principal first-year instructor, Jean Rutherford, was recognized by the Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society in 1996 for superior instruction of LSU freshmen. Much of your first semester will be taken up with learning how to learn a language Russian is a subject few people take up until college. Not many high schools even offer it. In Russian, you will not be immersed in an ocean of unfamiliar words on the first day of class. We assume you have no previous exposure to Russian and realize it's our job to train you. We start at the beginning, with the sounds and alphabet. Our proficiency expectations are far lower than those set for easier languages. Spanish, French, Swahili, and Haitian Creole can be mastered in about 480 hours of training. Russian requires about 720 hours for the same level of proficiency. We take the time to do the job right at your pace.

Extractions: Written by Yvan Tardy, Senior Lecturer in French, Dept of Modern Languages, De Montfort University The following case study, written in Summer 2002, has been created to demonstrate ways in which Internet resources, including those available on Humbul http://www.humbul.ac.uk/ ), could be incorporated into practical teaching and learning activities in French. Activities have been mapped to specific modules where relevant. Students are working on l'Affaire Dreyfus, a major scandal in French politics. They have been provided with background information in English on the 'Affaire' itself and they have to investigate online the involvement of the French writer, Emile Zola, who wrote a strong defence of Dreyfus (which is considered as a watershed in the involvement of intellectuals in political issues). Here are the activities suggested by their tutor: Go to Humbul http://www.humbul.ac.uk/ ; select ' French studies ', then on ' Primary Sources ' - Choose JulesFerry.com
