We will comment below on how his name came to be changed to the now familiar version of Oscar Zariski. Oscar's mother was the one who ensured that her young son had a good education. A tutor was provided for Oscar from the time he was seven years old and Oscar, under the guidance of the tutor, showed remarkable aptitude for the Russian language and for arithmetic. When the fighting associated with World War I reached Belarus, Oscar's family fled to Chernigov in the Ukraine. It was the first of several moves forced on him by political problems. Unable to enter the faculty of mathematics at the University of Kiev as all the places were full, he chose philosophy instead. He was a student of philosophy at Kiev from 1918 to 1920. However he was able to pursue his mathematical interests and studied algebra and number theory in addition to philosophy. However Zariski had carried out his studies through a period of turmoil in Kiev.

It seems to have been this work that set the seal of Zariski's discontent with the approach of the Italians to birational geometry . This subject, which deals with the solution sets of polynomial equations, can be traced back to Descartes but only developed into an important mathematical discipline in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By the early twentieth century, the "Italian school" of algebraic geometers had accumulated many interesting results but had become mired in foundational problems. Zariski, an adopted member of the Italian school, reformulated the subject in in terms of modern algebra and provided the basis for its twentieth-century development. Zariski was born Ascher Zaritsky (he Westernized his name while in Italy) in the city of Kobrin, then part of the Russian Empire. His father, a Taldmudic scholar, died when he was two, leaving his mother Hannah to support seven children. She did this by running a store, and in fact the family became one of the richest in Kobrin. Zariski was able to attend a gymnasium (prep school), where his mathematical ability became evident. During the First World War he lived with his brother and attended gymnasium in Chernigov, while Kobrin was under German occupation; he was unable to see his mother again until 1918. In 1918-20 he attended the University of Kiev during the Russian Civil War. Zariski attended classes in the midst of street battles; once he was wounded when Ukranian soldiers fired on students. After the Communists took Kiev and abolished examinations, he secretly went to the homes of professors to take them.

He obtained a doctorate from Rome in 1924 where he remained as a fellow of the International Education Board until 1927. In Rome Zariski came under the influence of the great algebraic geometers Castelnuovo Enriques and Severi . Zariski wrote in [2]:- However, even during my Rome period, my algebraic tendencies were showing and were clearly perceived by Castelnuovo who once told me: "You are here with us but are not one of us." This was said not in reproach but good naturedly, for Castelnuovo himself told me time and time again that the methods of the Italian geometric school had done all they could do, had reached a dead end, and were inadequate for further progress in the field of algebraic geometry. Zariski's doctoral thesis was on a topic related to Galois theory and was proposed to him by Castelnuovo . Zariski went to the United States in 1927 and taught at Johns Hopkins University where he was a Johnston Scholar until 1929 when he joined the Faculty at Johns Hopkins, becoming a full professor there in 1937.
