Extractions: Sir Christopher Wren Temple Bar During the eighteenth century Temple Bar was used to display the heads of traitors on iron spikes which protruded from the top of the main arch. One story goes that the Rye House plotters drew so much attention that telescopes were offered for hire in order to gain a better view. The last heads to be displayed were those of Towneley and Fletcher, who were taken at the Siege of Carlisle and executed in 1746. For some time after Towneley's execution his head was displayed on Temple Bar until a faithful family retainer secured possession of it and brought it back to Burnley, where for many years it was kept in a basket covered with a napkin in the drawing room at Towneley Hall.

At the outbreak of the English Civil War his Uncle Matthew Wren Bishop of Ely was imprisoned in the Tower and the Deanery at Windsor was attacked. The Wren family were forced to move out and his father went to live in Bletchingham, Oxfordshire with his daughter and son-in-law William Holder the mathematician. Left Westminster School but did not immediately go to university, but encouraged by Holder began to experiment in astronomy. He became an assistant to Dr Charles Scarburgh to sustain himself and helped him with his anatomical experiments. Entered Oxford University.

Extractions: Sir Christopher Wren, born in 1632 in East Knoyle, Wiltshire, first made his mark as a scientist becoming a Professor of Astronomy at London's Gresham College in 1657. He won his first architectural commission in 1663 for a chapel at Pembroke College, Cambridge and the Sheldon Ian Theatre in Oxford. Appointed Surveyor General by Charles II, he was chosen to design the new St Paul's Cathedral and more than 50 other churches to replace those destroyed by the Great Fire of London. Knighted in 1672, he designed and built the Sir Christopher Wren's House as his family home in 1676. St Paul's Cathedral was declared complete by Parliament in 1711, 36 years after the original foundation stone was laid when Sir Christopher Wren was 34 years old. He was 79 at its completion. Wren's father was the Dean of Windsor and in his early years the family lived in the Deanery within the grounds of Windsor Castle. Wren supervised the building and completion of the magnificent
