Having already received a commendation for gallant and meritorious conduct at the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco during the Mexican War, Wilkins had the reasonable expectation of personal advancement, and when he received a promotion from Adjutant to Captain of the 3rd Infantry in April, 1861, his notions might have seemed confirmed. Like many ambitious officers in the regular army, Wilkins was skeptical about the value of volunteer troops, and by the early months of 1862, his attitudes began to sour as he felt increasingly frustrated with the poor performance of the non-professionals in combat, the self-seeking leadership in the military, and the army's general ineffectiveness. Yet gnawing away even more at Wilkins' morale was his sense that while his class-mates from West Point and other officers rose through the ranks with ease, he remained mired in the sargassum of a captaincy. He moaned about having become the only field officer in his regiment, and was thus acting commander, while promotion still managed to elude him.

Contact Professor John Wilkins I am a specialist in the history of food in Greco-Roman culture, with current interests in literature (especially comic drama) and medicine (especially nutrition). The texts I am currently working on are the Deipnosophistae (Philosophers at Dinner) of Athenaeus and On the Powers of Foods of Galen, both written in the last 2nd/early 3rd centuries AD, at a time when Greek authors were reviewing the previous millennium of Greek culture. I enjoy spending time in the countries of Europe, eating unusual food and (best of all) sitting round a table with friends, sharing food and drink and arguing about things that really matter. I have co-organised conferences on food, comedy, Athenaeus and international exchange in Britain and abroad. I am also developing electronic aids to teaching and research. I have strong links and a number of shared projects with colleagues in Paris. I have had research grants from the AHRB and the Wellcome Trust for visits to Germany and Poland.     Extractions: June 1796-June 1802 John Wilkins, Jr. was born in Donegal township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1761, but within two years his father had moved the family westward to Carlisle. Ardent supporters of the Revolution, both father and son fought in its campaigns. John Wilkins enlisted at the age of sixteen, still in his teens, he was officially listed as a surgeon's mate in the 4th Pennsylvania Regiment in 1780. He transferred to the 1st Pennsylvania at the beginning of 1783 and served until the close of the Revolutionary War. It was undoubtedly as a result of his service as surgeon's mate that he won the nickname "doctor." After the war to Wilkins established a store in western Pennsylvania. He was a brisk, energetic trader, alert to every venture that promised profit. By the summer of 1790 he moved his store to Presque Isle to tap into the fur trade. During the next five years Wilkins eagerly pursued every business opportunity. He engaged in a profitable trade. But his arrangements to deliver flour to the William Duer, who was supplying rations to the western army garrisons and was soon to be responsible for supplying the St. Clair expedition, did not prove advantageous. Wilkins continued to build up his business and land interests and was still serving as a Brigadier General of the Allegheny militia when Washington appointed him Quartermaster General of the army on June 1, 1796. He immediately wrote General Wayne that he would proceed "with all expedition" as soon as his instructions and commission arrived from the Secretary of War. Four months later he informed the commander-in-chief that he had ''particular business at Pittsburgh, which induces me to relinquish my appointment." Apparently his resignation was not accepted because he continued as Quartermaster General for six years until the office was abolished by Congress on March 16, 1802.

This makes sense when you think of how trivial the article is20 lines of purely biographical facts: Wilkins was born in 1614, Wilkins died in 1672, Wilkins was chaplain for Charles Louise, Elector Palatine; Wilkins was named rector of one of the colleges at Oxford, Wilkins was the first Secretary of the Royal Society of London, etc. It is wrong, though, if we consider Wilkins's speculative work. He was abundantly curious: he was interested in theology, cryptography, music, the fabrication of transparent beehives, the orbit of an invisible planet, the possibility of traveling to the moon, the possibility of, and the principles underlying, a universal language. To this last problem he dedicated his book Towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Langauge (600 pages in quarto, 1668).
