The daughters were Mary Emma Walker, who married James Floyd Tennyson in 1871 and Annie Walker, who married William Lascelles Cowburn before they left England. Annie and William Cowburn lived in Winestead and at the railway station at Patrington before emigrating.

This is the third such design Walker executed for London man-about-town Arthur Lewis. Claude Phillips in the Portfolio described Walker's style as "but ever so slightly, some Anacreontic scene from a red-on-black vase" (cited in Marks, 97). Specifically, Walker is parodying the style of classical Greek pottery known as "Black Attic Ware" (circa 6th c. BCE) and perhaps even John Keats's "Ode of a Grecian Urn," with its Bacchic dancers and musicians. In a letter to his friend W. H. Hooper, Walker describes "fancy figures on a black background, similar to those on an old Etruscan vase; and in that case it would be well to have the card of a dull red, the figures and writing showing red, the rest of course being black. I went to-day to the British Museum, and think that something done on this plan would be novel" (cited in Marks, 97). Last modified 5 April 2002

Extractions: Previous (Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Arthur Walker attended Watford Grammar School and from there he entered Balliol College Oxford. He received an M.A. from Oxford and then moved to Edinburgh to undertake research. After completing his Ph.D. at Edinburgh, Walker was appointed as a lecturer in mathematics at Imperial College in London. This was a post for the academic year 1935-36 and after completing this temporary appointment he received his first permanent post as a lecturer in mathematics at Liverpool University. He was appointed in 1936 and was to remain in Liverpool until 1947 when he was offered the chair of mathematics at the University of Sheffield. In 1952, after five years in Sheffield, Walker was to return to Liverpool University, this time as Professor of Pure Mathematics. He held this post until he retired in 1974. Walker worked on geometry, in particular differential geometry, relativity and cosmology. His papers include ones on relativistic mechanics, completely symmetric spaces, completely harmonic spaces and Riemannian manifolds. Whitehead in July 1942 (arrived the Saturday before 18 July 1942). On arrival, Lt. General George H. Brett sent Walker on an inspection tour of the 5th Air Force bases. Brett asked Walker to carry out a study of the existing bombardment methods being used. At the time that Walker had arrived, there were three fighter groups, 5 bombardments groups, two transport squadrons and one photographic squadron operational in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) comprising 1,602 officers and 18,116 men. Extractions: Lieutenant, United States Navy From a contemporary press report: Arthur Walker Bryan, who taught at the Polytechnic Institute, died August 9, 1991 in McLean, Virginia, after a brief illness. He was 92. Mr. Bryan was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but was reared in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He attended the University of Maryland, Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and the Naval Academy in Annapolis. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1922. He did postgraduate work at the Naval Postgraduate School and Johns Hopkins University. He retired from the Navy as a young man and, in 1928, became an educator and a partner in the Cochran-Bryan Preparatory School in Annapolis. The school helped to prepare high school graduates to take entrance exams for military academies. During World War II and until the 1950's, the school's name was changed to the Bryan Preparatory School. Mr. Bryan later taught mathematics and physics at the Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore, retiring in 1968. Mr. Bryan was married to the former Mary Frances Murray, who died in 1956. The couple lived in Annapolis. In 1957, he married the former Mildred Smith Liedlich, who died in 1985. The couple had homes in Baltimore and the Canary Islands before moving to the Carl Vinson Hall Navy retirement home in 1982. Mr. Bryan is survived by two daughters from his first marriage, Elizabeth Bryan Ball of Annapolis and Mary Bryan Johnson of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. at the Fort Myer Chapel in Arlington, Virginia. Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery. The family suggested memorial contributions to the Carl Vinson Hall Infirmary, 6251 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, Va. 22101.

Arthur's Classic Novels Of all the spots on the world's surface that I, George Walker, of Friday Street, London, have ever visited, Suez in Egypt, at the head of the Red Sea, is by far the vilest, the most unpleasant, and the least interesting. There are no women there, no water, and no vegetation. It is surrounded, and indeed often filled, by a world of sand. A scorching sun is always overhead; and one is domiciled in a huge cavernous hotel, which seems to have been made purposely destitute of all the comforts of civilised life. Nevertheless, in looking back upon the week of my life which I spent there I always enjoy a certain sort of triumph; or rather, upon one day of that week, which lends a sort of halo not only to my sojourn at Suez, but to the whole period of my residence in Egypt. I am free to confess that I am not a great man, and that, at any rate in the earlier part of my career, I had a hankering after the homage which is paid to greatness. I would fain have been a popular orator, feeding myself on the incense tendered to me by thousands; or failing that, a man born to power, whom those around him were compelled to respect, and perhaps to fear. I am not ashamed to acknowledge this, and I believe that most of my neighbours in Friday Street would own as much were they as candid and open-hearted as myself.

Extractions: During his professional career, he brought recognition to himself and Mt. Sterling/Montgomery County through several leadership rolls in regional and statewide organizations. He served as president of Kentucky Highway Division of A.G.C. in 1953, president of Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors in 1954, and president of Plantmix Asphalt Industry of Kentucky in 1968. He had a passion to create a better living environment for Kentuckians. One way he did this was through a successful business that brought jobs to the community. He also served the community as a longtime director of Mt. Sterling National Bank and Delta Natural Gas Company of Winchester. Also, he was a long-term director of Mary Chiles Hospital and was one of the founders of the Mt. Sterling Golf and Country Club. Mr. Walker was a very astute business leader and outstanding citizen and made significant contributions to a better community, state, and nation. He died January 24, 1981, and through his son and family, he gave posthumously to the establishment of a large recreational park named in his honor. This park will be the site for wholesome activities in perpetuity, influencing the lives of thousands of children and adults.
