Extractions: About the Series This is a continuing series of books based on the Stanislaw M. Ulam Memorial Lectures given in Santa Fe, New Mexico. These annual invited lectures, originally sponsored jointly by the Institute and Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, are dedicated to the memory of Stanislaw Ulam, a great mathematician from the now legendary Polish School of Mathematics. 2004 Ulam Lectures Title: Raising Civilization Dates: 8000 years ago, the ancestors of humanitywhether they lived in sedentary villages or mobile bands, whether they collected wild foods or herded flocks or cultivated gardenslived in a world of kin and ritual in which the exploitation of many by a few was held in check. In a millennium or less, first in Mesopotamia, then in Egypt, then in India, China, Peru, Mexico, and elsewhere, villagers were incorporated into larger polities focused on sprawling urban centers and ruled by emergent elites. Did people willingly give up their independence to join such new polities or were they coerced by despots? Efforts to explain this fundamental transformation in the human career accelerated during the 20th century but no explanation, whether it depends on environmental change, population growth, conflict between classes or polities or other factors, is sustained by extant evidence.

Extractions: Stanislaw Ulam Memorial Lectures In the Fall of 1993, Ed Knapp, president of the Santa Fe Institute, and Jack Repcheck, then editor-in-chief of Helix Books at Addison-Wesley, approached me with a request: Would I inaugurate the Ulam Lectures? The series was to be an annual event, honoring the renowned twentieth-century polymath Stanislaw Ulam. The lectures were to be aimed at a general, science-interested audience, and they were to be expanded into a book so that there would be a permanent record. Although I am quite active in Institute affairs, the request came as a complete surprise. At first I was apprehensive because the time was shortthe lectures were to be given sometime in the first half of 1994 and a publishable manuscript was due at the end of that summer. But there were several incentives. At the top of the list was my long admiration of Stan Ulam's work. When I was a student, there were a few contemporary scientists whose work and abilities I particularly admired: John von Neumann, Ronald Fisher, and Robert Oppenheimer. In pursuing the many facets of von Neumann's work, I repeatedly came across the name Stanislaw Ulam in contexts close to my main interests. So I began to look into his work. That was the beginning of an increasing affinity for Ulam's approach to science, an affinity considerably enhanced when I read his 1976 book

Extractions: At the age of 10, Stanislaw Ulam entered the gymnasium in Lvov, and about this timehe became interested in astronomy and physics. To understand Einstein's special theory of relativity, he began to study mathematics from books, going well beyond the school level mathematics he was learning. He learned calculus at 16, and taught himself set theory from Sierpinski's book. He entered the Polytechnic Institute in Lvov. There he took a course from Kuratowski. Ulam obtained his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic Institute in Lvov in 1933, where he studied under Banach. In 1935, Ulam received an invitation from von Neumann to visit the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton for a few months. At the Institute, he met Birkhoff who invited him to Harvard University. Every year he commuted between Poland and the United States, and he became a lecturer at Harvard in 1940, and then an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin. In 1943 Ulam became an American citizen. Also that year, von Neumann asked him to work on the hydrogen bomb at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, where he solved the problem of how to initiate fusion. One morning in 1946, a newly appointed professor at the University of Southern California, awoke to find himself unable to speak. A few hours later, he underwent a dangerous surgical operation. In time, however, some changes in his personality became obvious to those who knew him. His ideas, which he spouted out at odd intervals, were fascinating beyond anything I have witenssed before or since. However, he seemed to studiously avoid going into details.
