    Extractions: "The Page Turner" is a slight, ruminative book, too short for its scope, the story of the love affair between Paul Porterfield, an 18-year-old aspiring pianist, and his musical and artistic idol, the former child prodigy Richard Kennington. When we first meet Paul, he is about to graduate from high school in California, intent on a concert career and getting ready to study at Julliard. He meets Kennington unexpectedly in San Francisco, when he is asked at the last minute to step onstage as page turner for his hero. This already prestigious award is provided by the Catholic Education Commission, NSW in honour of its previous and long-serving Executive Director, Brother John Taylor. As so many of you will know, Br Taylor played a key role in the development of Catholic education in this state over a long period. More generally, his impact on the development of Science teaching and the formation of the HSC extended his influence across all schools. He was always respected as a man of high ideals, simple taste and powerful intellect. His deep commitment and concern for Catholic education were widely acknowledged. In honouring his memory and paying tribute to his work the Commission sponsors this annual award for excellence in Catholic education. The annual winner is chosen by a committee which I chair, and that committee seeks to find the person who best fits the criteria specified for the award.     Extractions: Peter Turner died from asbestos disease on Christmas Eve of this year. Peter was well known as Building Worker Activist, politically an Anarchist/Syndicalist. Peter was a UCATT shop steward and Convenor on many sites between 1970 and the mid 1990s. He was a Convenor for the Construction branch of the old GLC who represented many thousands of workers at the time when they were fighting against its closure. He was the Convenor for Hammersmith and Fulham Council Building DLO in the early 1990s and went on to lose his job with the DLO. He then went on to represent other Council Workers after becoming a member of the GMB. Peter was Secretary of Hammersmith and Fulham Trades Council and a Member of the Greater London Association of Trades Councils being its president for a number of years. A supporter of the Construction Safety Campaign from the beginning of the CSC he supported our campaign to ban asbestos and attended our national demonstration over asbestos in March 1997. Peter was a committed internationalist taking part in a number of trade union visits to see how other workers were struggling to survive under what were oppressive conditions.

He was an outspoken and uncompromising opponent of the Aristotelean Calvinist . In the massacre of St. Bartholomew, in 1572, he was singled out by his enemies and put to death with every circumstance of cruelty and brutality. Ramus was a writer of more than ordinary brilliancy and effectiveness. He sought out the weak points in the method of teaching logic then in vogue, and directed his attack against them with the ability, and indeed, very much in the manner, of the celebrated Italian Humanist, Vives. He objected especially to what he called the sterility of the logic then currently taught, and pleaded for a reform of the science along lines of broader human interest. In his positive teaching, that is to say, in the logic which he wished to substitute for the Aristotelean , he was not very successful. In a general way, he may be said to have advocated a closer union between rhetoric and logic, between the art of exposition and the art of argumentation. Among his following, the "Ramists", as they were called, were the Englishman, William Temple, and the Germans, Sturm, Freige, and Fabricius. In the official academic world he met with opposition not only at the University of Paris but also at Wittenberg, Helmstadt, and elsewhere. His opponents were called Anti-Ramists. For a time, his campaign against Aristotle had the effect of rallying to his views the Anti-Aristoteleans of every country in Europe. His influence, however, did not last long, although some writers find evidences of it as late as 1662 in the famous "Port Royal Logic".
