Alfred Tauber is a hematologist and biochemist by training. From his interest in basic immunology, he began a critical examination of modern biology and medicine. These studies have focused on scientific epistemology: positivism, reductionism, and the relationship of facts and values. Dr. Tauber was appointed Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Philosophy and History of Science in 1993. He offers courses in the history and philosophy of science, the philosophy of biology and medicine, and American philosophy. Cohen 2001). In contradistinction to an animal in humoral balance with a pervasive environment, Bernard postulated the primacy of the organism's essential independence. Physiology became the mode of inquiry for medical experimentation, one that instantiated a reductive strategy based on positivist principles. Later, biochemistry and genetics pursued this methodological and theoretical approach, thereby providing medicine with its modern experimental basis. Bernard furnished biology with a new concept of the organism, one which would have wider ramifications than the establishment of a scientific method. Obviously, interchange with the environment was a necessary requirement for life, but Bernard emphasized how boundaries provided the crucial metabolic limits required for normal physiological function. His scientific and medical interests are not so far removed from his work in philosophy. "Scientists were originally called natural philosophers," he says, "and I see my work as all of one piece. "The origins of my research field, immunology, lie in early nineteenth-century biology. I traced them through Darwin to the twentieth century. What struck me about this history was how the shift from studying the entire organism to examining its parts exposed a new philosophical problem. With biochemistry and genetics on the one hand and ecology on the other, the organism, considered on its own, was lost. We abandoned the individual." Of the various biomedical sciences, only medicine maintains its fix firmly on the entire organism, Tauber says. "The patient is the meeting point of three different characterizations: the molecular, the social, and the individual. The physician must integrate all three domains. The focus on the minute components of complex function has been a powerful tool for analyzing disease, but in the process of objectifying illness, the patient as a moral or psychological subject is too often lost."
