Extractions: Sylvester was born in London and studied mainly at Cambridge. He became professor of natural philosophy at University College, London, 1837. In 1841 he went to the USA to become professor at the University of Virginia, but resigned 1845 and returned to England. For the next ten years he abandoned academic life, although he took in private pupils, including nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale. In 1844 he joined an insurance company, and in 1850 he became a barrister. In 1855 he returned to academic life, becoming professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, London.

March 15, 1897, London British mathematician who with Arthur Cayley founded the theory of algebraic invariants, algebraic-equation coefficients that are unaltered when the coordinate axes are translated or rotated. In 1838 Sylvester became professor of natural philosophy at University College, London. In 1841 he accepted the professorship of mathematics at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, but resigned after only three months. Four years later he went to London, where he became an actuary for an insurance company, retaining his interest in mathematics only through tutoring. One of the most notable of his private pupils was Florence Nightingale. In 1846 he became a law student at the Inner Temple, and in 1850 he was admitted to the bar. While working as a lawyer Sylvester began an enthusiastic and profitable partnership with Cayley. Together, they created the theory of algebraic forms. From 1855 to 1870 Sylvester was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He went to the United States once again in 1876 to become professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. While there he founded (1878) and became the first editor of the American Journal of Mathematics

English mathematician born on Sept. 3, 1814, to Abraham Joseph Sylvester. James Joseph was educated at the Royal Institution School, Liverpool, he proceeded to St. John's College, Cambridge, where he earned the coveted Second Wrangler in mathematics in 1837. Unable to swear to the Thirty-nine Articles of the Anglican Church, however, Sylvester was barred from obtaining a degree. Still, he earned the post of Professor of Natural Philosophy at University College, London, on Nov. 25, 1837. Single all his life, and dedicated more to public research than to regular teaching, Sylvester led a restless academic life. Appointed as Professor of Mathematics, University of Virginia, 1841, the year he obtained an M.A. degree from the University of Dublin, he resigned soon after, in March 1842, evidently because of an altercation with a student who had insulted him. He returned to England to work at Equity and Law Life Assurance Company from 1845 to 1855. Sylvester was called to the Bar in 1850. His next post was as Professor of Mathematics, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, from 1855 to 1870. During this stint he became President of the London Mathematical Society and of the Mathematical and Physical Section of the British Association.

Extractions: Eccentric and gifted English mathematician who was a close friend of Cayley . He was absent-minded, but nonetheless an accomplished poet and musician. After a brief stint as a professor in America, he returned to England. Here, he could not find a job and became a lawyer, in which capacity he met Cayley . Following a professorship at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich from 1855-1870, he became a professor at Johns Hopkins in 1876. He invented Sylvester's dialytic method for eliminating an unknown in two polynomial equations. He also collaborated with Cayley in his work on forms, discovering canonical binary forms for odd degrees. Forms for even degrees were later solved by E. K. Wakeford Sylvester also founded the American Journal of Mathematics in 1878. In 1883, he returned to England to fill the Savilian professorship of Geometry at Oxford after the death of Henry Smith . At the ripe age of 71, he invented the theory of reciprocants (differential invariants).

Extractions: by Karen Hunger Parshall By comparison with his contemporaries, James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897), one of the dominant figures of nineteenth-century British mathematics, had an unconventional career. He twice crossed the Atlantic in pursuit of academic employment, he held chairs in London, Woolwich and Oxford, and for more than a decade he was engaged in the practice of law. But while Sylvester may have spent many years physically separated from the mainstream of British and European mathematics, his letter-writing ensured that he remained very much in touch with its developments. Sylvester, like many Victorian mathematicians, was a prolific correspondentalthough not in quite the same league as Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) who wrote more than 98,000 letters in the last 37 years of his life! As Karen Hunger Parshall shows, Sylvester's correspondence makes for informative reading. From a collection of some 1200 letters of Sylvester and his circle Parshall has selected 140 "to cover Sylvester's life and work as completely and as substantively as the imperfect historical record allows."
