Extractions: Sylow's First Theorem Ludwig Sylow (1832-1918) was a Norwegian mathematician who discovered the first deep theorems connecting number theory to the structure of finite groups. He was not aware of group actions so his proofs were long and complicated inductions, but nowadays these proofs are a breeze. First we need a preliminary result. Definition A p-group is a group G whose order is a power of a prime p. It follows from Lagrange's Theorem that if G is a p-group, then every element has p-power order and from Cauchy's Theorem that if G is a group in which every element has p-power order, then G is a p-group. Notation Let G be a group acting on a set X . Extending our previous notation, let Y be a subset of X and H a subset of G . Define G Y G : y g stabilizer of Y in G , a subgroup of G X H X : x g fixed set of H Y H g G is just the orbit of x. In case H is a subgroup and Y is a union of orbits of H, H Y is the group H acting on the set Y. Cauchy's Theorem is a first step towards a converse of Lagrange's Theorem. A full converse would state that if n is a positive integer dividing the order of a finite group G, then G has a subgroup of order n. Of course this is false - we know that A A is simple. Sylow's Theorem says that nevertheless the statement is true if n is a prime power.

Extractions: TM Historical Background The World Cup is the world's most popular single sporting event. The World Cup originates from the Olympic games of the 20th century. In 1920, at the Antwerp Olympic Games, 14 nations from South America, Asia, and Africa participated in football matches. In the 1928 Olympic games that was held in Amsterdam, 17 nations gathered to participate in football matches. On May 26, 1920, FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) announced its plans to organize football competitions; this was the birth of the World Cup. During the FIFA General Congress of June 1929, FIFA president, Jules Rimet passed a vote to create the World Cup. He said, "We will open the World Cup match to all member nations to send their teams to participate". Consequently, the first World Cup match was held in 1930 in Uruguay. Unfortunately, it was held during a transition period between World War I and the world economic crisis of 1929 and not one European country applied to join in the event.

Extractions: (Redirected from Sylow The Sylow theorems of group theory , named after Ludwig Sylow , form a partial converse to the theorem of Lagrange , which states that if H is a subgroup of a finite group G , then the order of H divides the order of G . The Sylow theorems guarantee, for certain divisors of the order of G , the existence of corresponding subgroups, and give information about the number of those subgroups. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Definition edit Let p be a prime number ; then we define a Sylow p -subgroup of G to be a maximal p -subgroup of G (i.e., a subgroup which is a p -group , and which is not a proper subgroup of any other p -subgroup of G ). The set of all Sylow p -subgroups for a given prime p is sometimes written Syl p G Collections of subgroups which are each maximal in one sense or another are not uncommon in group theory. The surprising result here is that in the case of Syl p G ), all members are actually isomorphic to each other; and this property can be exploited to determine other properties of G edit The following facts were first proposed and proven by Norwegian mathematician Ludwig Sylow in . Given a finite group G and a prime p which divides the order of G , we can write the order of G as ( p n s ), where
