He attended the University of Michigan, obtaining his BS in 1952 and his MS the following year. Smale continued to work for his doctorate at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor under R Bott's supervision and he was awarded his Ph D in 1957 for the thesis Regular Curves on Riemannian Manifolds In his thesis he generalised results proved by Whitney in 1937 for curves in the plane to curves on an n-dimensional manifold. Smale was an instructor at the University of Chicago in 1956-58. In 1958 Smale learnt about Pontryagin 's work on structurally stable vector fields and he began to apply topological methods to study the these problems. He the spent the years 1958-60 at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton on a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. The last six months of this fellowship he spent at the Instituto de Mathematica Pura e Aplicada in Rio de Janeiro. Here he received a letter from Levinson which led him to study chaotic phenomena; we describe these ideas below.

Summary: Stephen Smale studies mechanisms of transcriptional regulation during the development and function of the immune system. One focus is on the mechanisms of heritable gene silencing during T cell development. (These studies are funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.) Our interest in gene silencing began with an observation made in collaboration with Amanda Fisher and Matthias Merkenschlager (Imperial College School of Medicine, Hammersmith Hospital, London) that a key regulator of lymphocyte development, Ikaros, is localized to foci of pericentromeric heterochromatin. These foci contain the pericentromeric repeat sequences from all murine chromosomes, which assemble into a repressive chromatin environment in interphase nuclei. The Fisher and Merkenschlager laboratories have shown that lymphocyte development is accompanied by the repositioning of the silent genes to the Ikaros-containing pericentromeric foci. Studies are under way to determine whether Ikaros is a direct contributor to the pericentromeric recruitment of developmentally regulated genes. During these studies, it became apparent that our ability to elucidate the functions of Ikaros was hindered by a general deficiency in knowledge of the assembly of silent chromatin. Although much is known about the hallmarks of silent chromatin, technical hurdles have slowed efforts to define the pathways involved in assembling silent chromatin at developmentally regulated genes. In particular, to study the temporal order of events involved in silent chromatin assembly, we need large quantities of primary cells maintained at an immature developmental stage. Furthermore, it must be possible to stimulate cell maturation ex vivo in a highly efficient and synchronous manner.

For mathematicians in particular there are multiple layers of messages. We are asked to review the launch of a stellar career in research mathematics projected upon the planes of McCarthy era communism, the Free Speech Movement, and the push to include more women mathematicians amongst our inner circle. We are asked to factor in the nature of our institutions, including the National Academy of Sciences, the National Science Foundation, the administration of the University of California at Berkeley, the legends surrounding the absence of a Nobel Prize in mathematics, and the Fields Medal selection process.
