Extractions: Matematyka Otwórz do druku Preface The present volume contains a selection of papers submitted by the participants of the Third Polish Symposium on Nonlinear Analysis held in £ód¼, January 29-31, 2001, and organized by the Faculty of Mathematics of the £ód¼ University and the Juliusz Schauder Center of Nonlinear Studies at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruñ. The main purpose of this Symposium was to integrate the large group of Polish researchers interested in different aspects of nonlinear problems, to present their recent results and to create a convenient platform for the exchange of scientific information and experience. Nonlinear Analysis is a major branch of mathematics encompassing various problems arising in mathematical, functional and convex analysis, topology, fixed point theory and their applications in the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, inclusions and the dynamical systems, control and game theories. There is a number of strong Polish scientific centers where these topics are extensively studied. During the Symposium a special session celebrating the 60-th anniversary of Professor Lech Górniewicz was organized. Professor Górniewicz, one of the leading specialists in the field of Nonlinear Analysis, is the head and a co-founder (together with Professor Andrzej Granas) of the Schauder Center, the Managing Editor of the journal "Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis" published by the Schauder Center and one of the persons promoting the development of nonlinear studies in Poland. The contributing authors and the editors are proud to dedicate this volume to Professor Górniewicz.

Extractions: Topics covered include the basic theory of set-valued mappings with both convex and nonconvex values, approximation and homological methods in the fixed point theory together with a thorough discussion of various index theories for mappings with a topologically complex structure of values, applications to many fields of mathematics, mathematical economics and related subjects, and the fixed point approach to the theory of ordinary differential inclusions. The work emphasises the topological aspect of the theory, and gives special attention to the Lefschetz and Nielsen fixed point theory for acyclic valued mappings with diverse compactness assumptions via graph approximation and the homological approach.
Extractions: The book is devoted to the topological fixed point theory both for single-valued and multivalued mappings in locally convex spaces, including its application to boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations (inclusions) and to (multivalued) dynamical systems. It is the first monograph dealing with the topological fixed point theory in non-metric spaces. Although the theoretical material was tendentiously selected with respect to applications, the text is self-contained. Therefore, three appendices concerning almost-periodic and derivo-periodic single-valued (multivalued) functions and (multivalued) fractals are supplied to the main three chapters. In Chapter I, the topological and analytical background is built. Then, in Chapter II, topological principles necessary for applications are developed. Finally, in Chapter III, boundary value problems for differential equations and inclusions are investigated in detail by means of the results in Chapter II. This monograph will be especially useful for post-graduade students and researchers interested in topological methods in nonlinear analysis, particularly in differential equations, differential inclusions and (multivalued) dynamical systems. The content is also likely to stimulate the interest of mathematical economists, population dynamics experts as well as theoretical physicists exploring the topological dynamics.

Famous mathematicians, economists and lawyers who called the city Lviv home Lviv was founded as a fort in the mid-13th century by Prince Danylo Halitski of Galychyna (Galicia), a former western princedom of Kievan Rus Empire (ancient Ukraine with its capital city Kiev - the most powerful and, geographically, largest state in Europe in the 11 th century; Kiev was razed by Mongol raiders in the 12th century). The Galicia became the Kingdom of Galicia after Danylo had been crowned in Peremyshl (now Przemysl Poland ). The city Lviv was named after King Danylos son Lev (Leo). The first mention of Lviv in early chronicles is from 1256, although archaeological excavation in 1993 revealed that the first settlements appeared in the 6th century. Galicia , with Lviv as its chief city, has kept its identity despite many boundary changes and centuries of rule by outside powers. Danylo King of the Kingdom of Galicia Western Ukraine
