Extractions: Previous (Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Julius Schauder was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army in 1917 and fought in Italy where he was taken prisioner. He then joined the Polish army in France before returning to Lvov to begin his university studies. After obtaining his doctorate in 1923, he taught both in a secondary school and at the university in Lvov. Brouwer published his fixed point theorems in 1911 for finite dimensional spaces. Schauder published fixed point theorems for Banach spaces in 1930. During 1932-33 he studied at Leipzig and with Hadamard in Paris. His 1934 paper on topology and partial differential equations is of major importance. His last work was to generalise results of Courant Friedrichs and Lewy on hyperbolic partial differential equations. In 1941 the German army entered Lvov and a systematic extermination of Jews began. Schauder sent pleas for help to Hopf and Heisenberg saying he had many important results but no paper to write them on. He was shot by the Gestapo in September 1943.

The founder of the Center and its first director was Professor Andrzej Granas. Since 1st of January, 1995 the position has been taken over by Professor Lech Gorniewicz. Since 1993 the Center in cooperation with the American Mathematical Society publishes the journal T OPOLOGICAL M ETHODS IN ... NALYSIS Professors Kazimierz Geba, Lech Gorniewicz, and Andrzej Garnas were the originators and founders of the journal. Prof. Jean Mawhin (Belgium) holds the function of the editor-in-chief, while Prof. Lech Gorniewicz is the managing editor. There are two volumes published each year. Each volume is constituted of two issues. In 1995 the Center commenced the publication of the series Lecture Notes in Nonlinear Analysis . The purpose of this publication is the popularization of topological methods in nonlinear analysis, particularly amongst Polish mathematicians. MY MEMORIES Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis Journal of the juliusz schauderCenter Volume 2, 1993. MY MEMORIES OF juliusz schauder. HM SCHAERF. http://www.mat.uni.torun.pl/~tmna/htmls/mem2.html
Extractions: Dedicated to the memory of Juliusz Schauder My earliest memory of Juliusz Pawel Schauder (nickname: Julek The friendship between our families dated several generations back. In Rohatyn my great-grandfather had been a barrister and both the father of Julek and my father had been his "koncypient", that is, apprentices in his law firm before they themselves became barristers. (In Austro-Hungary a doctor of law had to be a "koncypient" for seven years before being admitted to an examination whose passing was required for admission to the bar.) Julek's father, a hunchback, was respected by his fellow lawyers not only as a good practitioner but also as a theoretician who was publishing articles in legal periodics. Julek's mother gave the impression of being a rather unhappy person (frequently her eyes seemed to be red from crying). He had two brothers: Marian (Manko), who was one year older than I and later became a teacher of Physics in Italy, and Karol (Karolek), two years my junior, who later studied law; he also had a sister, Andzia, who was closest in age to him and whose married name was Stadler. He told me then that his university study was delayed by his army service and that, to make up for lost time, he had read Hausdorff's book "Grundzge der Mengenlehre" from cover to cover during the summer preceding his enrollment at the university. He had also read Goursat's "Cours d'Analyse'' and worked out all the problems in it early in his study years. Some years later he and S. Mazur organized a two-person private seminar at which they worked out all the problems in the newly published book of Polya-Szeg.
JULIUSZ SCHAUDER - PERSONAL REMINISCENCES Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis Journal of the juliusz schauder CenterVolume 2, 1993. juliusz schauder PERSONAL REMINISCENCES. RS INGARDEN. http://www.mat.uni.torun.pl/~tmna/htmls/mem1.html
Extractions: Dedicated to the memory of my teacher, Juliusz Schauder Before I give my personal reminiscences I would like to recall briefly what is known about Schauder's life (cf. [ ] and [ ]). I will not write here about his work, since this would take us too much aside (for this cf., e.g., [ ] and [ ]; unfortunately, neither text is in English: one is in French and the other in Japanese !).
