Det finns ett irländskt uttryck, "It is a long road which knows no turning." En variation av uttrycket lyder "It is a wrong toad that knows no learning."

Extractions: Grace Chisholm Young (18681944) This book includes essays on 43 women mathematicians, each essay consisting of a biographical sketch, a review/assessment of her work, and a bibliography which usually lists most of her mathematical works, a few works about her, and occasionally a few other references. The essays are arranged alphabetically by the women's best-known professional names. A better arrangement would have been by the periods within which the women worked; an approximation to that can be achieved by using the list in Appendix A of the included women ordered by birthdate. With its many appendices and its two good indexes, the bibliographic structure of this book is excellent. This together with its reviews of the work of many less-known women mathematicians makes it a valuable contribution to the history of mathematics.

Extractions: e-mail janlee@cs.vt.edu The August 1944 dedication of the Harvard Mark I calculator, otherwise known as the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (ASCC), was the culmination of several years' effort. Howard Hathaway Aiken conceived the plans for a large-scale calculator in 1937. IBM agreed to implement his ideas, and Clair D. Lake was put in charge of the project with Francis E. (Frank) Hamilton and Benjamin Durfee. Preparing for the Monday, August 7, 1944, dedication, the Harvard News Office prepared a news release titled "World's Greatest Mathematical Calculator," followed by the bold, unqualified statement that "In charge of the activity . . . is the inventor, Commander Howard H. Aiken, USNR," who "worked out the theory which made the machine possible." It is said that when Thomas J. Watson Sr. saw the news story, he became so irate over Aiken's stealing the spotlight that he planned to skip the ceremonial luncheon and the formal dedication. Fortunately, his intended hosts persuaded him to stay, and he played his part in the ceremonies magnificently. However, a rift remained between the university and IBM for many years.

Extractions: The 100th anniversary of the birth of Mina Rees, the first president of The Graduate Center, was celebrated at a tea in the Dissertation Reading Room of the Mina Rees Library on August 5. (Her actual birthday was August 2.) On hand were distinguished guests, donors, and friends of The Graduate Center-including many who knew Rees personally and worked with her during the graduate school's formative years. President Frances Degen Horowitz spoke of Mina Rees as "a pioneer" and "an actor on the national stage" whose life's workfrom applied mathematics during World War II, to her encouragement of the development of the earliest computers, to her role in establishing doctoral education at CUNYis legendary. President Horowitz also announced the appointment of mathematician Victor Kolyvagin to the chair endowed by Rees's estate.
