In every branch of science he stepped in, he left outstanding results: mathematics, mathematical logic, quantum mechanics, design of computer, the theory of automata, and the theory of games. He was also deeply involved in US military policy as an advisor. The swiftness of his mind (or the CPU of his brain) is legendary. Whether true or not, it is said that his calculation was faster than any computer of his day. During and after the war, he was involved both in the development of nuclear weapons and of computers. He annoyed Oppenheimer (then the Director of Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton) by bringing in the project of manufacturing IAS computer, against the policy of the Institute. He was also known as a reckless driver. Despite some (moral, say) misgivings, his contributions to science and technology are immense; and it seems quite silly ("legitimate" in some sense, though) to denouce this type of scientist on moral, social, or political (or whatever) grounds; everything considered, the balance is undeniably on the positive (good) side. At the age of six he was already showing an interest in math and was able to exchange jokes with his father in classical Greek. By the age of eight he became fascinated with history and read all forty-four volumes of the universal history, which resided in the familys library. John von Neumann received his early education at the Lutheran Gymnasium under the tutelage of Michael Fekete with whom he published his first paper at the age of eighteen. Von Neumann studied chemistry at the University of Berlin, until 1923 when he went to Technische Hochschule in Zurich where he received his diploma in Chemical Engineering in 1925. Von Neumann subsequently received his doctoral degree in Mathematics in 1928 from the University of Budapest at the age of twenty-two. His dissertation topic was set theory. Near the end of 1929, von Neumann was offered a visiting lectureship on quantum theory at Princeton University and by 1931 he was appointed full-time professor. In 1933 he was asked to be one of the original six Professors of Mathematics at the newly founded Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton. He retained this position for the rest of his life.

Extractions: Search MAA Online MAA Home December 2003 Later this month (28th December) marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of John von Neumann, the Hungarian born American mathematician who, among his many accomplishments, was the originator of the basic principle of computer design known as the "von Neumann architecture." Von Neumann computers are the ancestors of today's desktop and laptop PCs. The principal feature of a von Neumann computer is that the program and any data are both stored together, usually in a slow-to-access storage medium such as a hard disk, and transferred as required to a faster, and more volatile storage medium (RAM) for execution or processing by a central processing unit (CPU). Since this how practically all present day computers work, the term "von Neumann architecture" is rarely used now, but it was in common parlance in the computing profession through to the early 1970s. When von Neumann proposed this architecture in 1945, it was a radical idea. Prior to then, programs were viewed as essentially part of the machine, and hence different from the data the machine operated on. A common approach was to input the program by some physical means, such as wiring a plugboard, and then feeding in the data for the program to act upon. In 1945, in his first draft of a report on the EDVAC [a planned successor machine to the ENIAC, one of the first American computers], von Neumann proposed the stored program concept. The idea grew out of discussions he had with several other computer pioneers, among them J. Presper Eckert, John Mauchly, Arthur Burks, and Hermann Goldstine, who were working on plans for the EDVAC. What was to become known as the von Neumann architecture was subsequently spelled out more fully in a 1946 paper, written by von Neumann, Burks and Goldstine, titled "Preliminary Discussion of the Logical Design of an Electronic Computing Instrument."
